FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
NCSD Families,
Happy Fall! I cannot believe we are in October already because it does not seem like the weather has even changed yet. It has been a beautiful and mild fall to this point, but I am actually excited about the cooler temps coming in and ushering in the gorgeous color changes that come with it. I also am very pleased with the first month of our school year and how our students and staff have responded to getting back into the routines of the school year. Please read on as we have highlighted a number of our students and staff this month. Here are a few additional updates:
Superintendent Updates:
- Middle School Outdoor Learning Space - Many of you have had the opportunity to visit our brand new outdoor learning space at Novi Middle School. It is a gorgeous outdoor space that allows for multiple classes of students to go outside and learn in the outdoors. This has already been utilized this year as a joint partnership with the Novi NEF and monies received through an outdoor learning grant supported by our local State Representative Kelly Breen. This outdoor space is a great community asset and place for kids to get out of the classroom and into an outdoor classroom! We would love for you to come check it out!
- Coffee with the Superintendent - On Thursday this week (10/3), I will be holding my first Coffee with the Superintendent of the year. It will be at the Novi Public Library, at 6:00 PM. I will be joined by RosaLeigh Johnson and members of the Novi Mental Health Alliance as we discuss the Anxious Generation, and ideas that the district is exploring related to the data/research in the book. As an incentive, I will have 5 copies of the book to give away to guests that attend!
- Fall Break in Early November - As a friendly reminder, we will have our first ever mid-fall break taking place at the end of this month. The break will run the day after Halloween (November 1) through November 4. We hope this will give everyone a much needed break after October is done.
- 5-12 Grade Cell Phone Pilots - As you may have heard, our students in Grades 5-12 are trying different strategies to be phone free during instructional time. In 5-8 grade students are using Yondr pouches to store their phones during the school day, while in 9-12 students secure their phones in caddies located in their classrooms. Our goal here is to help students manage their phone use appropriately and provide more time for instruction and collaboration with peers. Over the upcoming months we will be surveying our stakeholders to see how things are going!
Go Wildcats!

NOVI ESPORTS AT STATE CAPITOL
Novi Esports members joined nearly 100 legislative and governmental guests at the Michigan State Capitol on Sept. 25 for Esports Day. The event provided a firsthand look at the educational and developmental benefits of esports in Michigan schools, while showcasing the dedication of students, coaches and Michigan High School Esports League to growing support and bringing awareness to others.
“I hope legislators take away that Esports should receive similar support to traditional athletics,” said Novi Esports coach Christopher White. “Just like any other sport, Esports allows students to compete, form bonds and connections, and practice skills of teamwork and coordination. I'd love to see our legislature provide financial support to those districts that might not be as fortunate as Novi, so as to help them develop their own Esports programs.”
White said several legislators and legislative aides were interested in knowing how popular High School Esports is nationally and where Michigan stacks up.
Novi went undefeated to win the state title last year in Valorant, a 5-on-5, first-person shooter game that requires players to collaborate and strategize in-game. Ravit Chandra earned Valorat player of the year honors in MIchigan.

Tickets are $12 for all ages via https://novihs.seatyourself.biz. “Take Two is a collection of short plays by various authors,” said Heather McKaig. “At the end of each play, the actors will say 'take two!' and redo the end of their scene. It promises to be a fun and creative night of comedy with just a little bit of seriousness.”
HIgh School Fall Orchestra Concert

Middle School Fall Play
JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit, Adapted by Ed Mast, Friday, October 18, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Novi Middle School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 and available in the NMS front office or at the door (cash or check). This 60-minute adaptation of Tolkien’s classic novel is a suspenseful, fast-paced journey through the sometimes dark, sometimes charming, always compelling world of Middle Earth. Bilbo Baggins is a comfortably well-off hobbit with a love for rousing adventure stories. Real adventures, however, are definitely not his cup of tea. So when Gandalf the wizard knocks at Bilbo’s door, bringing with him Thorin Oakenshield, 11 ragged looking dwarfs and a contract for an adventure to recover the lost treasure of Lonely Mountain, Bilbo could not be less interested—at first. But Bilbo’s love of a good story gets the better of him, and before he knows it, he is off on a perilous quest over mountain and under hill through caves and forest and slimy dark places.

STAFF SHOUT OUTS
We are thrilled to bring back a way to celebrate the incredible dedication of our staff members who go above and beyond in supporting students and their families through our Staff Shout-Out program!
Do you know a teacher, administrator, bus driver, office professional, paraprofessional, or support staff who has made a meaningful difference in your child's education or well-being? Now is the time to show your appreciation and acknowledge their hard work. We invite you to submit a Staff Shout-Out, spotlighting the outstanding individuals who have had a positive impact on our students.
From a teacher providing exceptional classroom support to a counselor offering vital guidance, every role contributes to the success of our school community. Your kind words of recognition can uplift a staff member’s day and highlight the strong, caring environment we nurture in Novi.
Each month, we’ll share these Shout-Outs with all district staff, celebrating the dedication and excellence that make our district special. Share your gratitude by submitting a Staff Shout-Out today through the Staff Shout-Out nomination form.
In addition to the Staff Shout-Out, NCSD recognizes a staff member each week called Weekly Wildcat. This recognition comes from staff nominations.
Here’s a recap of Weekly Wildcat winners so far:

more information about OCHN and the services they offer.
OCHN offers a reimbursement program, allowing families to be reimbursed up to $4,000 per household for services and resources such as individual counseling/psychotherapy, group therapy, family therapy, psychiatry, psychological testing, psychotropic medication, day-programs/partial hospitalization programs, and emergency room visits when associated with mental health. Anyone can apply and there is no income cap to receive reimbursement.
