2024 JJ Nearing Word-a-Thon:
Families and Friends of JJN are excited to present our final fundraiser of the school year, the 2024 JJN Word-a-Thon! This fundraiser was wildly successful last year and we hope to make it an even bigger success this year! All proceeds for this fundraiser will go directly towards our playground fund which currently sits at $28,216.83.
How it works:
On Wednesday, May 15th, teachers will hand out a word list and pledge form. Children are encouraged to practice sounding out and spelling the words at home. Students can collect pledges from their family and friends to support their efforts for the word-a-thon. This could be by a flat donation or a dollar amount per word. On Wednesday, May 22nd, students will write the test in their classroom and will be sent home with their test marked. This is an excellent chance for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. to celebrate your child’s success and collect the pledged money. All pledge forms with money collected needs to be returned to the school by no later than Monday, May 27th to ensure your money is added to the school’s grand total. There are school and class incentive prizes which will be revealed at an assembly on May 28th.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION
Coyote Interactions in St. Albert
Alberta Fish and Wildlife have notified the City of St. Albert about a reported interaction between a child and two aggressive coyotes in the green space between Albert Lacombe and Hillgrove Schools on the afternoon of May 15, 2024. The student had to take aggressive action to scare them away. Fish and Wildlife have investigated and found no evidence of the coyotes; however, the City will investigate the area further in the coming days and consider further action if deemed necessary. It is an active season for coyotes, who will be looking to protect their dens and new pups. Coyotes will follow individuals to ensure they leave the area and may show aggression if you are too close to their den. In the meantime, the following guidance is provided:
• Walk the trails in the area in groups
• Remain on paved trails; do not use other trails that may be present in the greenspace.
• Parents may wish to accompany their children on their walk or find a different route home temporarily.
• Make lots of noise when using the trails so as not to surprise the coyotes
• If approached, make the experience unpleasant for the animal. Respond to their presence aggressively by making yourself appear larger, wave your arms overhead, and shout loudly.
• DO NOT TURN AWAY OR RUN.
If any further encounters occur, please notify Fish and Wildlife at 1-800-642-3800
