Dear Students, Parents, and Staff,

As we welcome the arrival of spring, I want to take a moment to wish each and every one of you a fantastic Spring Break filled with relaxation, rejuvenation, and joyful moments.

This break presents a wonderful opportunity for all of us to unwind, spend quality time with loved ones, and engage in activities that bring us happiness and fulfillment. Whether you're planning a getaway, exploring new hobbies, or simply taking time to recharge, I encourage you to make the most of this well-deserved break.

As we embark on this brief hiatus from our academic and professional responsibilities, let's also remember to prioritize self-care and safety. Whether you're traveling or staying close to home, please exercise caution, follow any recommended guidelines, and take necessary precautions to ensure your well-being and that of those around you.

For our students, I hope this break provides a chance to reflect on your accomplishments thus far and return with renewed energy and focus for the remainder of the academic year. Remember to make time for both relaxation and academic pursuits, striking a healthy balance between work and play.

To our dedicated educators and staff, I extend my deepest gratitude for your unwavering commitment and tireless efforts in supporting our students' growth and success. SHA accepting applications for Tombs Scholarship

Tombs ScholarshipThe State Highway Administration is again seeking applications for the Eddie B. Tombs Scholarship, which is available for students graduating from a Maryland public high school and interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Systems, Transportation Systems Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Design, or Construction Management at Morgan State University.

Scholarship recipients will receive up to $4,000 per year toward tuition for a four-year degree at Morgan State and will participate in SHA’s summer internships program. One student will be selected as recipient of the scholarship award for the fall 2024/spring 2025 semesters. The application deadline is June 28, 2024.

The scholarship honors Tombs, the first black person hired to perform engineering related work at the Maryland Roads Commission, now the State Highway Administration. In addition to his devotion to his family and community and his service in the U.S. Navy, Tombs committed more than 33 years of service to the SHA and was involved in preliminary planning the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), I-70 and the National Freeway (I-68). During his tenure, he encouraged the agency to increase hiring and promotion of minority employees.

The CMIT South volleyball team is hosting a student volleyball tournament to raise funds for their upcoming season. Get your friends, make a team, and get registered to play!! All students are welcome to participate and the winning team plays the staff team!

High School Tournament: May 13th-17th (& 20th if needed due to no school on the 14th)
Middle School Tournament: May 29th - 31st (& June 3rd if needed)

Games will begin right after school and multiple games will be played each day of the tournament. The final schedule will be determined based on the number of teams that sign up. The winner of the student tournament gets to play the staff in a championship match!

If you are interested in participating, please read the information below:
- Each team must have between 6-10 players.
- Each team must have a minimum of 1 girl on the team.
- Sign up your entire team using ONE registration form (link below) by April 26th.
- Each PLAYER must pay a $7 entry fee to participate. Players may not play in any games until their entry fee is paid. Payment link will be sent to players once the team registration form has been submitted.

Remember, no students can be added to your team after you submit the registration form, so make sure you have all your team's information when registering. Join us for our Annual Fine Arts Night on Thursday, April 18th, from 6-7:30 pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Entry fee is $5.

We are excited that PGCPS students have the opportunity to earn Service-Learning Hours during the school day! Students can participate in the following school-based service-learning project in order to reach the required 24-hour service-learning requirement! All middle and high school students are eligible to participate in Project 24.

Schools are also able to create and implement a specific project that meets the needs of the community. Proposals must be submitted to Doreen Hogans one week prior to the implementation date. Proposals can be submitted by using this link.

*Student’s social media posts must be approved by the SSL Coordinators and/or Principals’ designee prior to posting. Failure to obtain approval will result in forfeiture of hours. Students can screenshot approved posts to verify completed activity.

**Student’s letters must be of original thought and cannot be mass copied. Prior to email submission or postal mailing, letters must be approved by obtaining the signature of the SSL Coordinator(s) and/or Principals’ designee. Students must attach the following cover page to all letters.

CMIT Family,
As we begin preparations for next school year, we are asking those scholars that will not be returning to CMIT next year to please complete a withdrawal request in the link below. Because PGCPS is moving from schoolmax to a new student information system (Synergy), blackout dates for withdrawals is June 1-July 21. After June 1, 2024, all request would have to be made once the new system is in place.

1. Student lunches should be sent with them when they arrive for school or lunch can be purchased in the cafeteria via MySchoolBucks.
2. Please refrain from bringing fast food to the school for your students and their friends throughout the school day and during their lunch period.
3. Food deliveries ordered by students, parents, family members or friends will NOT be accepted from DoorDash, Uber Eats, GrubHub or any other food delivery service or vendor.
4. All orders for students will be refused and sent back with the driver. CMIT South MS/HS is not responsible for any cost or loss of food.

Hello CMIT South MS/HS Families,

We want to ensure that all parents and students know the CMIT South attendance policies. At CMIT South, we follow the PGCPS attendance policy AP 5113. Below are some quick bullet points of the attendance policies:

• CMIT South will use the Google form 2023-2024 Absence Reason Notification Form CMIT South Middle/High School for all student's absences. This form will be the official means of parent/guardian notifications for student absences. Parents can also email attendance@cmitsouth.org when their student will be absent.
• CMIT South does not take paper excused/doctor notes. When a student is absent please fill out the Google form 2023-2024 Absence Reason Notification Form CMIT South Middle/High School. This form will be sent straight to the attendance manager. Parents are the only ones who can fill out the form and email the attendance manager about a student who is absent. A student cannot send the email or fill out the Google form, the absence will not be excused if a student does it.
• The Google form must be filled out within 3 days of the student’s absence; otherwise, the absence will not be excused. This can be emailed as well.
• Students who are considered unlawfully (unexcused) absent from school or a class will not have the opportunity to make up missed assignments.
• A doctor’s note is needed if a student is reported absent for three school days for an illness, and a physician’s certificate will be required if a student's absences reach six days. Please send the physician’s certificate to the school's attendance manager at attendance@cmitsouth.org.
• Mental Health Day. Students may receive as an excused absence one (1) day of absence in each semester of each school year for a student’s mental health needs. A note from a physician to excuse a student’s absence for mental health needs is not required.

Kappa Youth Development, Inc. will be awarding scholarships for an African American Male graduating high school student attending a college/university during the 2024-2025 school year. In order to be eligible for the 2024 Kappa Youth Development, Inc. Scholarship, students must:

Be a graduating high school senior
Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 out of 4.0
Apply and provide proof of acceptance to a college or university.

• RLJ Spence Sr./Kappa Youth Development, Inc. Technical Scholarship

(Four $1,000 Scholarships) (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math-STEM Major)

Kappa Youth Development, Inc. in conjunction with Mr. Reginald L. Spence will be awarding a 4-year scholarship in the amount of $1000 per year for a African American (Male or Female) graduating high school student majoring in a Technical or Science field (Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, Math etc.) that lives in Prince George's County or Southern Maryland and will be enrolled and attending a college or university during the next four years. (2024-2028). Must have a high school cumulative GPA of 2.5. The awardee must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 per academic year to continue to receive the $1000 scholarship award in each of the years while attending college.

• Steel Point Solutions/Kappa Youth Development Inc. Scholarship

(One $1000 Scholarship) (FINE ARTS--Major)

Kappa Youth Development, Inc. in conjunction with Steel Point Solutions LLC. will be awarding a scholarship to a African American (Male or Female) graduating high school student, majoring in Fine Arts (music, journalism, creative writing, graphic design, theatre, fashion, art, photography, acting or culinary arts) that lives in Prince George's County or Southern Maryland attending a college, university or trade school during the 2024-2025 school year. Must have a high school cumulative GPA of 2.5.

• Dewayne and Jacqueline Wilcher/ Kappa Youth Development Inc. Scholarship

(One $1000 Scholarship) (ANY MAJOR-Must attend NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY)

Kappa Youth Development, Inc. in conjunction with Dewayne and Jacqueline Wilcher, will be awarding a scholarship designed to support a young and gifted graduating high school African American Male student who will attend Norfolk State University. The applicant must:

1. Have attained a minimum cumulative high school G.P.A. of 2.5.

2. Live in southern Prince George's County or Southern Maryland.

3. Attend a college or university during the 2024-2025 academic school year.

• Kenyatta Kerr/Lifeline/Kappa Youth Development, Inc. Scholarship

(One $1,000 Scholarship) (CRIMINAL JUSTICE--Major)

Kappa Youth Development, Inc. in conjunction with the Kerr/Lifeline will be awarding a scholarship designed to support a graduating high school African American Male student that will major in a Criminal Justice related college degree. Eligibility Requirements: Review the below scholarship requirements to ensure you are eligible to apply for this life-changing opportunity. Who can apply? The SMART application is open August through December of every year, with awards being granted the following spring.

All applicants must be:

• a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or United Kingdom at time of application,
• 18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2024
• requesting at least 1 year of degree funding prior to graduation (which starts at the program start date),
• able to complete at least one summer internship (multi-year scholars only)
• willing to accept post-graduation employment with the DoD,
• a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale,
• pursuing a technical undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the 24 STEM disciplines listed below,

What you need to know

Scholarships are awarded for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years of funding, depending on degree requirements. SMART is a one-for-one commitment; for every year of degree funding, the scholar commits to working for a year with the DoD as a civilian employee.

Undergraduate applicants

Must be currently enrolled at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university Must be able to produce a fall 2023 (or earlier) college transcript at the end of the term AP coursework is not considered college credit

Graduate applicants

Can be either currently enrolled in a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or awaiting notification of admission If awaiting admission, you must be accepted for entrance in the fall 2024 term Scholars enter the program as either recruitment or retention.
