SPRING TERM - 27th FEBRUARY 2025

Message from the Executive Headteacher
Welcome back and I hope you had a wonderful half term break, we have now passed the half term point of the academic year which is quite remarkable and has happened so quickly. The Spring flowers are now emerging which certainly brightens the walk to school.
This week the children have quickly settled back into their routines and staff are looking ahead to an exciting week ahead.
Next Thursday 6th March is World Book day. All children are invited to dress as a character they like from a book. If they can bring a named copy of that book with them to share with their friends that would be great. No football kits please. The staff will of course be joining in the fun and the school will be "booktastic" all day. In addition we are very grateful to HPPA who are funding an author visit to ensure World Book Day is memorable. Below is information about our Author, Lucy Reynolds and her visit on Friday 7th March, if you wish to purchase any of Lucy's books please scan the QR codes below.
National Science week is coming up and this year Nursery and reception will take part in bubble workshops. Year 1 & 2 will go into the Explorer Dome which will be set up in the hall. This has also been funded by HPPA. There will of course be plenty of science going on in school, thanks to the staff and particularly Claire Keith who has coordinated this. There will be plenty of pictures next week.
We are hugely grateful for all the work of HPPA and its volunteers who provide tremendous support for the school, without which many of these wonderful additions to the curriculum would be impossible. Please continue to support HPPA.
A Parent Consultation letter was sent out on Monday 24th March by separate email. Please ensure you sign up for your virtual appointment by Wednesday 12th March if you have any problems contact the admin team.
The summer term club information will be sent out next Wednesday 5th March at 7pm. Please sign up direct to the clubs via the links provided. As a reminder if you have any changes to the pick ups to clubs, please contact the club direct. Secondly, if your child needs to be collected early from the club, please ensure the club provider is aware and is able to facilitate bringing your child to you at the allotted time.
Have a wonderful weekend when it arrives.

Year 1
Year 1 are looking forward to a fantastic half term full of fun learning! Throughout this term, we continue on our travels with our exploration of different places around the world. We will be identifying structures and landmarks, and continents and oceans through our English texts and our geography work.
In English, we using the text ‘Emma-Jane’s Aeroplane’ to take us around the world, discovering new cities and countries as we go. We will be writing descriptive sentences and looking at the features of leaflet writing and non-fiction texts, before using all of our work to write our own leaflet.
We have been exploring addition and subtraction in maths, looking at how both mathematical operations relate to each other. We have been using ten frames and bar models to help us identify the fact families for numbers within 20, as well as looking at how we can use the ‘=’ symbol at the beginning AND at the end of number sentences. We learnt that we can add two numbers together in any order, but subtraction cannot; we must always subtract from the largest number.
We have been describing objects using labels in computing, matching objects to groups and identifying the label most appropriate for each group of objects. In DT, we have begun exploring and investigating ways in which we can make structures strong and robust. We looked at various structures around school and famous landmarks around the world, such as the Eiffel Tower, and used scrap paper and masking tape to experiment with and build our very own structures, identifying what they might need to make them stable and strong.
In PE, we have begun our gymnastics topic by exploring various travelling movements. We have been using different parts of our bodies to travel on, as well as looking at travelling at high and low levels. We have also begun our net and wall games topic, looking first at how we defend our space using a starting position. We practised standing with our feet hip width apart and knees bent, and returning to our starting position after each roll or throw.
Finally, we began our new science topic, ‘Plants’, by thinking about what plants need to grow healthily before putting our theories to the test by placing cress seeds into four different environments. We are going to be observing what happens to the cress seeds over the forthcoming weeks. We’ll let you know what happens!
