On the Horizon
VUHS May 24, 2024
Principal Message
Social Justice Fest was a success. I love that VUMHS has three events in the spring that are run by students. Seeing student voice in action is one of the reasons I love this community. The students raised funds and food for Child Poverty to the local Food Bank and HOPE in Middlebury. One of the fundraisers were raffle tickets to pie Mr. G and I. To enjoy all the pictures please scroll down.
The end of the year is a very busy time. Students are working on completing all of their assignments and learning as much as they can in the final weeks of school. Students were engaged in so many different activities this week and I am sure we did not capture pictures of everything but we did capture a lot of photos. Please take some time to see all the wonderful things happening at VUHS below in School Spotlights.
“Cal and the Maple Nuts” entered the Beats for Good Music Festival competition and they have been selected as one of the top 10 finalists! Now it’s up to all of us to vote for them in this final round! The submission with the most votes gets a $5,000 donation to that school’s music program and a $1,000 dollar scholarship. This is all on top of kicking off the Good Music Festival in July. Please vote for “Cal and the Maple Nuts” by Sunday, June 2nd, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST – https://dogoodfest.com/beatsforgood Way to go Cal Gramling, Riley Gagnon, Megan Mentzer, Ben Hargett and Brody McGuire!!

The newly elected 24-25 Vermont FFA Officer team pictured with National FFA Southwestern region VP, Emily Gossett. L to R: Megan Lafountaine, Gerrit Beenen, Emily Gossett, Erin Whipple, Mckenzie Chase and Jessie Allen. Four of the five state officers are HCC students!
Our Agricultural Mechanics and Technology team earned 2nd place, with Trevor Carr, Colton Reed and Wyatt Kennett each earning a $5,000 scholarship to the University of Northwestern Ohio. Trevor Carr also earned third place individually out of more than 40 competitors. Our Parliamentary Procedure team qualified to compete nationally in Indianapolis this fall. Calvin Almeida earned third place of ten drivers in the Safe Tractor Operation Competition. We enjoyed a tour and creemees at Silloway Maple. Vergennes FFA brought the musical chairs rotating trophy home again this year.
Our Walden Program just spent three and half days exploring historic Concord, Boston, and Lincoln, MA. They met with scholars from the Thoreau Society and Walden Pond. It was a wonderful trip.
A few members of the Green Team had a great time at the FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Thinking) Summit at Shelburne Farms this past week. After the guest speaker, students took part in workshops where they learned about cheese making, made homemade corn tortillas and homemade arepas (South American flatbread). After a delicious lunch they made a group nature art mandala and took a farm tour on one of the hay wagons. They stopped to pet some animals before we headed back to the school.
Our National Honor Society hosted a 5K on Sunday May 19th for mental health awareness. All funds raised went to Project HOePpnEr.

Community Events
PCAVT is starting a Circle of Parents Group called Family Fun Circle. The idea came after several discussions with folks about the challenges of summer for parents. Working parents must find childcare and parents who aren’t working are with their kids more than during the school year. This Circle would focus on support for parents of children in preschool through 5th grade. It will be a space to share ideas and frustrations such as, “my child is making me crazy”, “how do I limit technology?”, “how can I develop a summer routine?”. In addition, participants will exchange suggestions for activities and outings that are free or inexpensive!
It will be on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm, beginning June 11.
