The 2024-25 School Calendar
Watch the video below on the new CSD App!
Missing 10% of a 4-day week = 14.6 days absent ~ can cause more challenges for students.
~ Bus Stop Reminders ~
Please remember there is a 5 minute window before and after the time the bus can come. So if the stop time is 7:18 am, students need to be at the stop no later than 7:13 am.
The (Pass Creek) bus will be stopping on Montgomery Street in the mornings before school at 7:20am. Remember there is a 5 minute window - students need to be there by 7:15 a.m. And no change to the afternoon bus run/stop. The bus stops directly in front of the stairs going up to the Armory from Montgomery.
This year, CSD will not be providing free breakfast for all students. Meal prices, however, have been reduced to what they were in the 2022-23 school year. CSD encourages families to look into the free & reduced meal program. Info for food service is available at https://www.csd.k12.sd.us/o/csd/page/csd-meal-program. Contact your school for more info.

Employee Spotlight ~ Joey Kortemeyer ~ 21 Years of Service
Why did you choose to work for CSD? I chose Custer School District because it was a smaller sized community and school system for my children to grow up in. I also love the location of Custer and the recreational opportunities that are close by.
What is the biggest change in your position or in education during your tenure here? I’ve been here a long time, so I’ve seen a lot of changes. 😊 Probably the biggest change I’ve seen in education has been the emphasis placed standardized testing. There used to be more flexibility in what a teacher taught and planned for activities. With the emphasis on standardized tests, teachers have been more focused on getting through the content that is tested. I sometimes miss the ‘fun’ projects that used to be done, however; I love that our teachers are more focused on teaching and their students learning the essential standards.
Can you share a positive change (in your building or in the district) that you have witnessed during your years? I think the building projects have had a positive impact on our students. Since I’ve been here, all three schools are housed in new buildings, and we are starting on a new CTE expansion!
What piece advice would you like to share with students or a favorite quote? Advice I would give to a student would be to be honest, be respectful, and to try new things.
What’s a fun fact about you? I am a life-long Minnesota Vikings fan. As a kid, I attended training camp with my dad every year and got autographs from the players. I thought it was so cool! I also LOVE the Olympics. It is incredible to watch athletes perform at the highest level possible knowing that they have sacrificed and worked so hard to be the best in the world. Going to the Olympics is on my bucket list – LA28 might be the year!!

Early Education Program for Pre-school Aged Children
Custer School District is proud to announce its first-ever, all-day early education option, specifically designed for children ages 3, 4, and 5, who miss the kindergarten cut-off. This innovative program marks a significant step forward in our approach to early childhood education, emphasizing an all-together approach, and ensuring every child has a sense of belonging from the very start of their educational journey.
The new program caters to both typically developing children and those with diagnosed disabilities, fostering an environment where all students can thrive together. We are committed to providing a supportive atmosphere that embraces diversity in developmental needs.
One of the key aspects of this initiative is affordability. Families of typically developing children, based on income qualifications, can access this program at an affordable rate. This ensures that financial constraints do not hinder any child from benefiting from high-quality early education.
"This new all-day early education option represents our dedication to supporting families in our community," said Nicole Wells, a collaborative member of developing the all-day option within the Custer School District. "We believe that early education should be accessible to all children, regardless of their developmental differences or financial circumstances. By creating this all-together and nurturing environment, we aim to empower every child and support their families in achieving their goals."
Custer School District is excited to launch this program and looks forward to welcoming children and families into this supportive educational environment. For more information about enrollment and program details, please contact Nicole Wells at nicole.wells@k12.sd.us for the Custer area and Forrest Paris at forrest.paris@k12.sd.us for Hermosa.

Get to know, Mrs. Kayden Kursave, HES Gr 4 Teacher!
We want to welcome our newest teacher to the Hermosa Staff, Ms. Kayden Kursave.
Where are you from?
I have lived around the Rapid City area most of my life. I even attended Hermosa Elementary School for a few years. I completed high school in Timber Lake South Dakota. From there I moved to Spearfish to obtain a teaching degree at Black Hills State University.
Why did you want to teach here?
When I went to school in Hermosa I loved the community. I always wanted to return to the Custer School District because the people are welcoming, kind, and willing to help wherever they can. In 2023, I student taught in two different classrooms, and I still had the same feelings about this town.
What are you most looking forward to?
Now that I am back in this community, I am looking forward to impacting students the same way I was impacted. Each student is greeted with a big smile and shown how much they each mean to our school. I want to help students reach their greatest potential. Each student is unique, and I value what every student brings to our classroom, school, and district. While I could teach anywhere, there is no other place I would rather be than right here in the Custer School District.
Anything else you’d like to say or let people know?
I would just like to add that I am forever grateful to the people in this community. Not only did you help me when in need, but you also cheered me on as I achieved my biggest dreams and goals in life. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your love, support, guidance, and wisdom.
