Happy New Year!
Learning about Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our Student Teacher
We officially welcomed Ms. Kramer as our full time student teacher this week! Ms. Kramer spent quite a bit of time with us first semester observing and teaching a few lessons. We are excited to have her with us every day now!
A Peek at our Week
Writing: This week, writers began a new unit! We are not only nonfiction readers, we are nonfiction writers also! Students made a list of topics they feel they know a lot about. They are learning how to plan their writing across their fingers, sketch quick pictures to remind them of the facts they want to write, then finally writing the facts in their All About books. We already have books being written about dogs, cats, Minecraft, rainbows, and so much more!
Math: We are working on wrapping up Module 2 by looking at teen numbers as a ten and some ones. Students are practicing breaking apart a teen number by saying it is "1 ten and ____ ones._ They also learned how to represent that number using a vertical line for the ten and circles for the ones. We also continued to practice solving math word problems using the Read, Draw, Write method. First, we read the problem. Next, we draw and label our math picture. Finally, we write a number sentence and a statement to match the problem. An example of the Read, Draw, Write (RDW) method is pictured below. Next week, students will complete our end of Module 2 assessment to show what they have learned!
Word Study: This week, we worked with the -ng blend at the ends of words. We worked with -ing, -ang, and -ong. Students are working to decode and write words such as sting, sang, and strong.
Headphones!
Please ask your child if they currently have working headphones in the classroom. Next week, we will be taking the Fast Bridge computer assessment. Wednesday, 1/17 will be Fast Bridge Reading and Thursday 1/18 will be Fast Bridge Math. Headphones are a must! If your child does not have working headphones, please send in a set as soon as possible. Thank you!
Chapstick!
Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day will be here before we know it! Students will be exchanging Valentines with their classmates. They can create a mailbox at home to hold their Valentines. Details are below! Please make sure your child includes a Valentine for every student to avoid hurt feelings. No edible items on Valentines can be included. Please have your child choose Valentines that do NOT include candy attachments. Thank you!
