Points from the Principal
As we head into the last week before Christmas break, please talk to your students about a few reminders.
1. Slow down and drive carefully- the roads are slippery, and they might need more time to get places
2. Students need to stay on task in the classroom and finish this month strong.
3. Even though we have dress-up days- students are not allowed to wear PJ's.
Words from a Cop
This week I would like to touch on accidents. Throughout my career, I have noticed that younger drivers get extremely nervous, even with minor fender benders, and don’t know what to do. If you are a parent of a new driver, or young driver, make sure you discuss accidents and what to do. First, have your information (insurance and registration) up to date and readily available. If something does happen to you and the police officer needs to get that information, it should be somewhere easy to locate.
Next, stay in your car. Staying in the vehicle gives you protection from the other traffic, especially if you are on a highway, or busy road. Lots of people in accidents like to jump out right away and completely forget there are other people driving. Next, if possible pull off to the side of the road. This is a much safer place to check your damage if you feel so inclined. Once you are in a safe place, call 911. Not reporting an accident is a misdemeanor. Let the officer decide if a report is needed, or not. After 911 is called and the officer arrives, hand them your information (driver’s license, insurance, and registration). This information should be ready to be handed off by the time the officer gets on scene.
Next, give the officer a detailed description of what happened. Avoid saying things like “I was headed this way”. Instead say “I was headed west” if you know directions. Giving a more detailed description helps you calm down and helps the officer to understand what happened.
Accidents happen, but most are preventable if we obey street signs and pay attention.
Stay safe, stay vigilant

Notes from the Nurse.....
Already this autumn season, we are seeing an increase in pneumonia cases.
Pneumonia is a respiratory infection in which the air sacs in the lungs become inflamed and filled with fluid or pus, making it difficult and painful to breathe. It can be caused by a bacteria, virus, or fungus. Pneumonia is often the consequence of a COVID or influenza infection. It is spread through respiratory droplets in the air or from touching contaminated services and then touching our faces (nose, mouth, eyes), similar to the way other respiratory infections are spread. Symptoms include fever, dry cough, headaches, body aches and weakness. However, instead of feeling better within a few days, symptoms worsen and may include chest pain, shortness of breath, a rapid heart rate, shaking/chills and/or a blueish tint to the lips and nailbeds. Pneumonia can be diagnosed per chest xray, sputum sample or blood cultures. Treatment includes antibiotics (for pneumonia caused by bacteria), bronchodilators (to help ease breathing), fluids and LOTS OF REST!! A person with pneumonia may remain contagious for up to 48 hours after starting an antibiotic and fever has stopped, and it may take from one week to one month before full recovery. Untreated pneumonia can lead to a lung abscess, sepsis and ultimately respiratory failure. Some of the infections that can lead to pneumonia can be prevented with vaccines. These include the flu vaccine, the pneumococcal vaccines, and the COVID vaccine. Meticulous hand washing, cough etiquette and immunizations are the best public health measures we can take to keep ourselves and those around us healthy this season!
