Stevens' Scribbles
We are rounding the corner to the end of the year and even closer is the start of our M-Step testing. An M-Step Testing Letter was sent out similar to report cards and should have been found in your email. While this letter goes into more detail, the schedule can be found below.
I hope everyone had a relaxing and restful spring break!

Did you Know?
April M-Step Testing
To administer testing in this manner, students will have 2 half days (delayed start) where they will attend school in the afternoon only while the other grade is testing in the AM. For those students with a delayed start, school will start at 11:36 am. On Tuesdays, we will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hours in the afternoon, while on Wednesdays, we will have 4th, 5th, and 6th hours. Busing will be provided to students. A separate letter from transportation will be mailed with specific bus stop times. The grade that is testing will have a regular full day but will be testing for the first half.
Tuesday, April 22nd – 6th Grade Math M-STEP (7th grade ½ day in PM)
Wednesday, April 23rd – 7th Grade Math M-STEP (6th grade ½ day in PM)
Tuesday, April 29th – 6th Grade ELA M-STEP (7th grade ½ day in PM)
Wednesday, April 30th – 7th Grade ELA M-STEP (6th grade ½ day in PM)
Please note that there will no lunches served to students who are only attending in the afternoon. Lunches will be served to students in attendance for the full day. Please see the schedule on the back of this letter for a more complete picture of how the day will look and contact the school if you have any questions. Students must bring their charged district Chromebooks!
Protect MI Child
One resource that is extremely important to make parents aware of is the Michigan Child Protection Registry. This Registry is a do-not-contact service that families can easily and quickly sign up for at www.ProtectMIChild.com in order to keep their children safe while on their devices at school and at home. This is a free Registry offered through the State of Michigan that stops adult advertisements from reaching our kids through e-mail, text, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Discord, Twitch and TikTok. This Registry is an excellent resource for making sure our kids aren’t being served ads for alcohol, tobacco/vaping, online gambling, pornography or marijuana.

March Lightning Leaders
6 Blue - Ella
Ella was nominated for Lightning Leader by our 6th-grade blue team. Outside of school, Ella enjoys basketball, painting, and running. Ella also ran cross country for Rolland-Warner and is doing track this spring.
When asked about her favorite class, Ella said it is Choir class with Mr. McDaniels.
Staff members say Ella is helpful to all students. Ella is helpful to all students; she’s enthusiastic about learning, kind, and a friend to everyone. Staff also describe Ella as being responsible and having a good work ethic.
Thank you, Ella, for being so helpful and kind here at Rolland-Warner!
6 Green - Hughey
Our 6th-grade green team nominated Clare for Lightning Leader. Clare enjoys participating in clubs that RW offers after school and has joined the American Sign Language (ASL) Club, Book Club, and Unity Club this year. Clare also enjoys roller skating, swimming at the Rec Center, and solving Rubik's cubes.
When asked if he has a favorite class or staff member, Clare said she doesn’t have a favorite, but she does love her outdoor education class because being outside and working in the forest “just feels like home”.
Staff members say that Clare takes initiative and is friendly to all staff and students, and they feel they can always count on Clare to do the right thing.
Thank you, Clare, for being someone we can count on at Rolland-Warner!
7 Blue - Antonia
Antonia is a 7th-grade student at Rolland-Warner who was nominated by our 7th-grade blue team. Outside of school, Antonia enjoys working on her art projects, and her favorite thing to draw right now is birds.
Teachers said they nominated Antonia because she is an outgoing, spirited young lady who can always be found helping others. She is always asking for more tasks to take on to help in the area of citizenship. Antonia is well-focused on her academics, and it serves her well as her grades are exemplary.
When asked who her favorite staff member is, Antonia said it is Mrs. Furneaux because she’s always so kind and caring toward her students.
Thank you, Antonia, for displaying such great examples of citizenship!
7 Green - Alexis
Alexis is a 7th-grade student on the 7th-grade Green Team at Rolland-Warner. Outside of school, Alexis stays busy playing softball, basketball, and volleyball.
When asked if she has a favorite class or staff member, Alexis said her favorite is Mrs. Hauxwell, and said that besides enjoying her ELA class, she is very, very funny and fun to talk to.
Staff members say Alexis is the kind of student who leads by example. She works hard in the classroom, always pushes herself to do her best, and she keeps that mindset both in class and on the court or the field. Her team of teachers said what helps her stand out is her willingness to help others, be it tutoring a classmate, helping a teacher, or cheering on her peers. Alexis is known for treating everyone with kindness and respect, making her a positive force in our school community!
Thank you, Alexis, for being such a great addition to R-W!
RW Support Staff - Mr. Betzold
Mr. Betzold was nominated by his colleagues as a Rolland-Warner for our April Lightning Leader. Mr. Betzold is one of our dedicated paraprofessionals and has been loving this job for 14 years now. Outside of school, Mr. Betzold keeps busy by working with the Lions Club of Metamora as well as organizing events that raise money for many of our local charities here in Lapeer.
Fun Facts: Did anyone know that Mr. Betzold once rode a bicycle across the state in one day? He started in Montague in the morning and ended in Bay City that night - 151 miles! Along with biking he also enjoys camping and hanging out with his children. Super Fun Fact: Mr. Betzold recently also started practicing with the Flint Rogues Rugby Club - so cool!
Staff members say that Mr. Betzold is someone they can count on no matter what. It doesn’t matter if he’s assigned the task or just sees that a colleague needs help; Mr. Betzold jumps in. Staff have noted that there have been many children throughout the years that have been tough, almost impossible to get through too, yet somehow Mr. Betzold always does; he just never gives up on a kid in need, and is the model of what, “Kids First”, should look like.
Thank you, Mr. Betzold, for keeping our “Kids First”, everyday, here at R-W!
RW Teacher - Mrs. Quinlan
Mrs. Quinlan was nominated by several staff members to represent the staff Lightning Leader. Mrs. Quinlan is in her 19th year of teaching and is also our Special Education Department Chair here at RW. She not only teaches her math classes but also pushes in to other rooms to help support many students and staff in our building.
When she’s not here at R-W making our students smarter, she loves playing softball, scuba diving, and skiing. Fun Fact: Mrs. Quinlan is a huge U of M fan, and they go to all of the home football games. She and her husband have been doing this tradition together since back when they attended the campus - GO BLUE!
Staff members say that Mrs. Quinlan is a wealth of knowledge, especially in different ways to engage and accommodate the many different learning styles represented in our building. She always works as a team to find solutions that work for all stakeholders and staff feel listened to when they come to Mrs. Quinlan for help. She listens, helps to diagnose, and then always checks back in to see how things are going.
Thank you, Mrs. Quinlan, for being such a dedicated teacher to our students and our staff!

Dress Code
As we approach the warm weather, we always remind:
The dress code in the student handbook and accompanying School Board Policy promotes an environment where “students are expected to dress and groom appropriately and in a way that reflects personal and school pride”. There are not specific rules listed in the handbook, and the ultimate determination is up to administration. Some general guidelines are as follows.
· No clothing promoting alcohol, drugs, or tobacco.
· Clothing should not be too revealing. Shorts and shirts should be an appropriate length and undergarmets should not be showing at any time.
· Hats and hoods are prohibited.
If students are violating the dress code, they may be asked to change clothes or put other clothing over the top of existing clothes. Repeated violations will result in parent contact and potentially discipline
