As Heartland Break approaches, it's the perfect time to pause and recharge. We hope this long weekend offers you a refreshing change of pace—whether you're spending it with loved ones, enjoying the fall weather, or simply taking a moment to rest. Enjoy the break!

Blessing Our Speaker
No chapel this week because of Heartland. We do, however, have a giving opportunity that has been shared with the students through announcements. Ms. Tairin VT shared a chapel message with us last week and she is in a 20+ year commitment to bringing the Good News to an unreached people group in Chad, Africa. For the next two weeks, there are donation buckets near the WCHS coffee shop and in the HUB. If you would like to encourage your son or daughter to donate, please do so. If your family wants to support her work, send those dollars to school with your son or daughter. We’d love to bless Tairin as she returns to Africa in a little over a month.
*There will NOT be a chapel this week due to the Heartland Christian Educators Convention.*
All of these events will be livestreamed. Please consider joining us for chapel by subscribing to Western Christian High School Livestreams on YouTube.

Covenant Partnership
Digging through Western’s archives reveals some interesting insights into Western’s founding. In 1919, the first year at then Western Academy, the school’s operating budget was $8,000. The faculty was lean; one teaching Principal and one additional full-time teacher. Tuition was, get ready… $50 per student. It would be interesting to know how that translates into 2024 dollars; to be sure, it was a sacrificial commitment for families. With 40 students enrolled that first year, there was a significant gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each student. Over Western’s 105-year history, our society has played a significant role in providing young men and women the gift of a Christ-centered education. Our prayer is that the church, home, school covenant partnership remains vibrant for the next 100 years at Western Christian.

MIDTERM
We have reached midterm. It is a good time to check your student’s grades, attendance record and lunch account balance. These are all accessible through JMC. In the Family Portal go to Academics, Attendance Report for attendance and Progress Reports for current grades. To see individual assignment grades for a class click on Qt1 for the class. While you are in JMC you can also set up alerts if you would like to receive notifications on any of these reports. Alerts can be set up under Academics, Alert Configuration.
PASS/FAIL OPTION
During the Junior and Senior years, students may opt to take no more than one elective course a semester on a pass/fail basis. This option is only for students taking 7 or 8 Western credits that semester. The decision to take a course pass/fail must be decided by the student by the end of the 6th week of that semester, Monday, October 7. The decision needs to be recorded by the Registrar. A "pass" in the course will not affect the student's grade point average but a "fail" will affect it similar to a "F" in any course.
If, according to the discretion of the teacher and the administrative team, the student is not making sound educational use of the course, the student can be dropped from the course with no credit.
Be aware that some colleges will see a pass as no higher than a D, so if the elective class is one you may need for your field of study the letter grade will be better on your transcript.
Students are to contact Mrs. de Boom if they are interested in taking a class pass/fail.

Student Support
At Western Christian High School, we recognize our students’ unique creation and the variety of God-given talents and skills. We know that each student presents a unique combination of such strengths. We believe it is our responsibility to meet students where they are at in their journey and equip them with the tools and resources required to exceed their potential. To meet the need, we have a Student Support Team with a variety of resources. Go here to learn more about who to connect with!

What I’ve Learned About School Choice
Before their children started school, this couple explored public, private, and homeschool options without clear conviction and eventually enrolled their oldest son in a public Spanish immersion program. After homeschooling during the pandemic, they transitioned to a private Christian school, realizing that school decisions are flexible, guided by wisdom, and ultimately under God's sovereign care.
Check out this quick read about the School Choice movement -- several good takeaways!
Non-Discrimination Policy
Western Christian High School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs (if any exist), and athletic or other school administered programs.
