It's been a full and exciting Fall thus far! Terry Hall's Body Safety convocation, a very successful Blood Drive, Choir concert, Band showcase, College Fair, Red Ribbon Week, another staff member celebrated, two sectional championships in Cross Country, both boys and girls, and a first ever State appearance by our boys team! These only highlight some of the many great things going on at and with Jennings County High School this fall.

October was certainly full, and November will bring mock interviews, mock elections, winter sports, the TOC Silent Auction and performances, NWEA testing November 1st-4th, Accuplacer testing November 7th-11th, Thanksgiving break November 23rd-25th, and so much more.

Congratulations to Carol Romine, FACS teacher at JCHS, for being named a Hoosier Distinguished Citizen by Governor Pence for all of her charitable work with PUDM http://donate.rileykids.org/site/TR/DanceMarathon/DanceMarathons?pg=entry&fr_id=2901 and Riley's. The Preparing for College & Career students are getting ready for their “Mock” job interview on November 9th and 10th in the Media Center. This interview follows an employment project where students apply for a job at one of the following companies: Kohl’s, Rural King, American Eagle, JayC, Bath and Body Works, Pizza Hut, Bob Evans, Save-a-Lot, Starbucks, TJ Maxx, or Red Lobster. Students then conduct internet research on the company, complete the job application, create their own personal targeted resume, and targeted cover letter to accompany the application. Students are asked to dress up on the day of the interview.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with these mock interviews. If you have experience in conducting interviews and are interested in helping, please contact kgraham@jcsc.org. Interview photos will appear in the December newsletter.

The Academy of Fine Arts seniors will be having a meeting this week, Thursday, November 3rd during PAWS period to go over the senior presentation requirements and to make plans.

We will be meeting with all AFA students soon to look at some merchandising options.

Drawing students have been working on perspective drawings and dealing with space on a 2D surface.

Painting students have recently finished a unit on Impressionism and the Hoosier group. We did some plein air painting.

A touch of Class will be presenting their show, Let Freedom Sing, on Friday, November 11th and 12th at 7:00pm. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. This show features many favorites.

Patriotic songs from old to new. Seniors Kaleb Downs, Trevor Maschino, Abby Sabelhaus, Kaydee Sandifur and Mackenzie Vannoy will be singing a song they chose for this very special show.

We will be having our annual TOC Silent Auction during our intermission, so be prepared to do some Christmas shopping as well!

MPJC wrapped up their competitive season with a 2nd place finish and highest score in their competitive history at Lasalle High School in Cincinnati, OH!

The "Best Pep Band In the Land" is gearing up for another awesome pep band/basketball season! We're hoping to see everyone out at the games this year to enjoy top-notch musical and athletic entertainment!

Tracy Martin and Marisa Patterson will be attending the first ever School Based Pantry Conference sponsored by Gleaners Food Bank on Monday, November 14, 2016.

French Club will be taking their French restaurant field trip to La Petite France in Cincinnati on Tuesday November 22, 2016.

Spanish and German clubs had the a great day at IU watching the Hoosiers take on Northwestern. The game ended in a tie, but over 50 students enjoyed a beautiful day on campus watching the game and eating in one of the dorms. Several JCHS alumni joined us for a wonderful day.

Spanish 1, 2, 3 and 4 have been busy during the last week getting ready for the Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos. We have watched videos and documentaries explaining the holiday, built ofrendas to honor our loved ones, made paper flowers and paper banners to celebrate, and of course had Mexican food. IMPACT is an alternative to the traditional classroom. IMPACT is in its 3rd year at the high school and is currently being taught by Mrs. Sarah Sterling, who has been with the program for 8 years, Mr. Chris Billings, whom is new to the program this year and Mrs. Tonia Malcomb, who is in her 2nd year of assisting in the IMPACT classroom. This program’s curriculum is almost entirely delivered from our online program, Edgenuity or also known as e2020. The other large part of this program is character education and the education and implementation of life skills into the students’ daily lives. IMPACT currently has 35 students enrolled in the program, and those students have earned a total of 53 credits so far this semester! Most of the students that are enrolled are ½ day student, but there are a few that use the program as a full-day alternative to the traditional classroom. Measures of Academic Progress, MAP, is a new formative assessment tool used by the Math and English departments this year. All 9th and 10th grade students will be taking the MAP test three times during this school year. The results of MAP will determine a student’s instructional level and will measure academic growth throughout this year and from this year to the next in the areas of math and English. Map tests adapt to each student’s level of understanding and therefore allow each student the opportunity to show improvement. This adaptive nature also gives teachers the information they need to recognize areas of weakness for a specific student or for a group of students. MAP testing will begin in November.

Health – Health classes started out with an overview of the human body, including major body systems, their functions, and how to improve their overall health. Students collaborated on a poster project over a body system that included a presentation in front of the class with their peers.

The next unit provided students with information on personality, building self-esteem, stress management, mental disabilities, suicide prevention, and where to find help within the community. Students created a brochure over stress management that highlighted common issues among teens.

PE – Freshman PE classes have completed the track, starting at 400 meters and ending with a mile. The boys classes have played Pantherball, Soccer, and are currently in a volleyball unit. The girls have played Soccer, Speedball, and are also currently playing Volleyball.

Both classes have been running stair laps, and doing a variety of different types of fitness tests such as Push-Ups and Jump Rope.

The freshman PE classes took a break from the 'norm' and went off campus to hike the trails at Muscatuck Wildlife Refuge and Muscatatuck County Park October 3rd-6th.

Strength & Conditioning – This class provides our student athletes with an opportunity to work out during school hours to enhance their strength, speed, quickness, agility, and flexibility. Students are provided with a proper dynamic warm up, speed and agility exercises, weight training, and other group exercises. Technique is a major point of emphasis during the first 9 weeks as students begin to lift for the first time. Students are currently finishing up their max-lifts for the major core lifts: squat, power clean, dead lift, and bench press. These "max's" will be recorded to show growth throughout the school year.

In social studies this month, the election of 2016 has taken center stage in multiple classes. Students in Miss Evans' government class were visited by the County Clerk, registered to vote, and produced propaganda advertisements for candidates of their choice by creating videos and online advertisements. In current events, Mr. Land's students are also election focused and are studying candidates, parties, and election issues. Mr. Ludwig's and Miss Evans' students all viewed the documentary Electoral Dysfunction, which was partially filmed in Jennings County. All students will soon be taking part in an online mock election sponsored by the Youth Leadership Initiative.

Students from JCHS attended a field trip to Vincennes University on October 21st. They toured the campus, ate lunch with other college students, and were able to see what life on a college campus looks like. Students learned about the STEP Program and about the different opportunities at the VU. Students attending Vincennes can enroll in programs ranging from engineering, automotive technology, land/resource and planning, athletic training, nursing, law enforcement, and education.
