PAT Contract Update

Dear families,
We are thrilled to welcome you back for another successful school year! Thank you for being part of our Portland Public Schools community, where we strive to provide every child with an exceptional learning experience daily. Because our children's success is at the heart of what we do, we want to share an important update that has a potential impact on school this fall.
We are negotiating a new three-year contract with the Portland Association of Teachers (PAT), the union representing our educators. Our bargaining teams met as recently as August 31 and September 7 in state-mediated negotiations and made progress. Our teams are scheduled to meet again on September 15. You can learn more about these negotiations at pps.net/bargaining.
We have said before and we want to reiterate our strong desire to reach a consensus with PAT and avoid disrupting students’ education. We were grateful to hear PAT President Angela Bonilla voice the same desire at the September 5th Board meeting. We also want to be transparent and provide you with ample time to plan for a possible school closure because we know how difficult a disruption would be on students and families. If we cannot reach an agreement over the coming weeks, it could result in a strike later this fall, leading to school closures as early as the fourth week of October. If schools close, limited essential supports (e.g. meals) will still be available to students. If necessary, we will share those plans with you as soon as possible.
We remain focused on providing our community’s children with the best possible learning experience while honoring educators' essential and primary role in student learning.
We will keep you updated on the negotiations with PAT. Thank you for your continued trust in our district to provide your children with an exceptional education.
In community,
Guadalupe Guerrero
