Douglas 4-H Buzz
June 2024 Edition
Welcome back Callie!
Hi, I’m Callie Taveirne and I am very excited to be the 4-H summer intern this summer for Douglas County. I just finished my second year at Concordia college as a pre-dental student. I am majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry and business. In my free time I like spending time with friends and family and love being outdoors, at the lake, hiking, reading, and spending time with my pets.
This summer I will be working on summer day camps for K-2nd grade children, a mystery trip for grades 6-9 and introducing a new event for kids in grades 3-5. I will also be at Woodland Elementary School for the summer Compass program working in the school garden. This summer, I will also bring the Science Academy program to Woodland for a day focusing on interactive science education. Science Academy is a science outreach program I am a part of at my college.
If you spot me at the fair or Fashion Revue, don't hesitate to stop by and say hello—I'd love to chat about all things 4-H and beyond!
Demonstration Judging
When a former 4-H member is asked, “what did you gain through 4-H that has made the most impact on your career success?” the skill most often mentioned is public speaking.
Giving a demonstration is a wonderful opportunity to build those skills and gain self-confidence. All are welcome, 4-H premiums awarded and opportunity to qualify for a state fair trip for youth 6th grade and up. Livestock demonstrations will be judged at the county fair.
In the demonstration area (traditional demonstration, illustrated presentation, youth in action or livestock demonstration), youth are evaluated on their ability to communicate information, proper use of visuals, correct use of an introduction, body and conclusion, and the ability to answer questions.
Registration deadline is June 10. Go to mn.4honline.com and under events, select Douglas County 4-H Demonstrations. You must pre-register to be eligible for champion, reserve champion and state fair. Thank you for being respectful of this deadline so we can secure materials, schedule demonstrations and prepare the judge. Reach out of if you have questions or need help.

Food Revue Judging
Food revue is a fun part of the food and nutrition project area. Design a fun menu, typically around a theme, and a menu that incorporates a healthy balanced meal. Next step is to present your information to a judge. The exhibit consists of a display that includes the following: table setting for your meal (includes dishes, cutlery, placemat/tablecloth, glasses etc.), one of the items from your menu prepared and brought to judging, an 8.5 x 11 copy of your menu and an 8.5 x 11 copy of your featured item's recipe. See flyer for ideas.
During judging, exhibitors are asked questions about the menu and the food item prepared. Exhibitors should have knowledge around menu choices, food groups, nutritional value and cost per serving.
Registration deadline is June 10. Register at mn.4honline.com and under events look for Douglas County 4-H Food Revue. You must pre-register to be eligible for champion, reserve champion and state fair. Thank you for being respectful of the registration deadline so we can secure materials, schedule presentations and prepare the judge.

R.J. Kern, Artist, Photographer - Talks and Exhibition
The more time I spend with young people growing up on farms and the more I learn about their plans for their futures, the more enthusiastic I am to use the tools I understand to carry their stories and experiences to a broader audience - R.J. Kern.
Artist Biography - R.J. Kern (b 1978) is an American artist whose work investigates ideas of home, ancestry, and a sense of place. His portraits focus on intimate, interdependent relationships of people, animals, and landscape as a means of exploring how ancestry shapes identity and how myth intertwines with personal history. His camera has led him from an inquiry into his lineage in the farming communities of Scandinavia and Ireland to the examination of similar communities near his home in Minnesota. Increasingly, his attention has been captured by the next generation of young people, who may or may not be the stewards of rural communities and economies in the future. Visit https://www.rjkern.com for more information.
Come, listen and learn at the Douglas County Fair (4-H Exhibit Building) brought to you by the
Douglas County Agricultural Association in partnership with Douglas County 4-H.
- Wednesday, August 14 at 12:30 p.m. - Mr. Kern presents "On Being a National Geographic agricultural photographer"
- Wednesday, August 14 at 4:30 p.m. - Mr. Kern presents "The Unchosen Ones: Advice for 4-H Competitions & Life Skills Learned in 4-H"
- Thursday, August 15 at 1 p.m. - Mr. Kern presents "On Being a Commemorative Artist for the Minnesota State Fair"
- Thursday, August 15 at 4 p.m. - Mr. Kern presents "The Unchosen Ones: Advice for 4-H Competitions & Life Skills Learned in 4-H"
