News from Mrs. Bletcher in the Counseling Corner
We are excited to begin one of our most successful community service events this year, The TJS Souper Bowl! The Souper Bowl is a school-wide competition to see which class can collect the most cans and boxes of nonperishable food items. All food is donated to our local, Morris Interfaith Food Pantry. Today, students across grade levels viewed a slideshow explaining the mission of the pantry and the details of the school-wide event. Feel free to view the slideshow here. Additionally, our 5th Grade Peer Leaders will be making morning announcements, hanging posters and collecting food items daily. Below, please find the information you need to help your child participate in this worthy cause.
Why should my child participate?
Because research shows that kids benefit from participating in acts of giving.
When will this event occur?
Monday, 2/6 to Friday, 2/17.
Where can my child drop off their food items?
Upon arrival, students should bring food items to their classrooms to be counted and picked up by Peer Leaders.
What specific food items should I purchase?
Canned fruits and vegetables
Peanut Butter – 15-18 oz preferred
Cereal – lower sugar preferred
Soup – Hearty and Condensed
Tomato products (sauce, crushed, whole, diced, NO GLASS PLEASE.)
Pasta
Rice
Dry milk (1-qt. packages) or Parmalat
Tuna fish, salmon and other canned fish
Baby food – stages 1, 2 and 3
Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance for your generosity. Please feel free to reach out with any questions to Mrs. Bletcher at bletcherj@madisonnjps.org.
TJS Family Reading Night...Student Bookmark Competition!
A bookmark template is linked here. Students are encouraged to design a bookmark that shows their love of reading and includes the words "TJS Family Reading Night 2023". Entries are due back no later than Friday, February 17, 2023, and should be dropped off in the main office to Ms. Garcia.
Valentine's Day Celebrations
We request that you adhere to the following guidelines for Valentine's Day cards:
No candy or goody bags of any kind may be distributed with the cards.
The cards must be brought to school no later than Friday, February 10, 2023. This will allow for the cards to be distributed before the special day.
If you elect to participate in the Valentine’s Day Card exchange, it is expected that your child gives a card to every classmate.
Classroom teachers will be reaching out to inform parents of the ingredients of any food items that will be served at the Valentine's Day party. We will continue to adhere to the elementary food allergy guidelines. Parents of children with food allergies will be required to complete a permission slip form in order to consume the classroom treat.

Weekly Reading Tips from Mrs. LoBrace
All About Making Predictions
Making a prediction is when a reader uses information and clues from the text and their schema to anticipate and take a guess about what they might discover in the book they are about to read. ***See last week’s reading tip to find out more about schema!
Students can make predictions before, during, and after reading. It is an effective strategy for:
-monitoring their comprehension as they read
-establishing a purpose for reading
-deepening their comprehension as they look at details within the story
-gaining meaning about a topic
-keeping them moving through the text in anticipation of whether their prediction is correct
***Readers can make predictions:
Before Reading, by using the title and cover illustrations to predict what the story will be about/what they will learn.
During Reading, by stopping often to guess what will happen next or what they will learn next using the information previously given in the text to help. Confirm whether your predictions were correct so far and form new predictions based off of new information!
After Reading, by checking to see if my predictions were correct and making predictions about why the author wrote the story.
Sentence Starters for Making Predictions

Grade 1 Leave Replacement Teacher, Ms. Elizabeth Murphy
Hi! I’m Lizie Murphy and this is my first year teaching at TJS! I currently teach first grade, I am fulfilling Mrs. DeMarco’s maternity leave. Teaching at Torey feels extra special to me because in 2017 I worked as a TA at TJS! I was born and raised in Morristown. Believe it or not - I never thought I wanted to be a teacher. I had dreams of going to a culinary arts program and then in college, I wanted to edit children’s books. I graduated from Juniata College in 2010 with a degree in Communication and Media Studies.
Right after graduation I moved to Denver, Colorado, and spent a year serving as an AmeriCorps member. I worked with Habitat for Humanity building houses and finally realized the part I liked was when I was teaching different volunteers how to do specific tasks. I moved back to NJ and went back to school at night while working full time. I graduated from the College of St. Elizabeth in 2015 and began my education journey.
After working as a TA in Morristown where I grew up, I started working at Kings Road School in a 1st-grade class. In 2017 I became a Teaching Assistant at TJS and worked with Mrs. Pelkey, Mrs. Demarco, Mrs. Altieri, and Mrs. Gambino. I was offered my first long-term replacement position and said goodbye to TJS. Since then, I have taught first, second, third, and fourth grade. I have been all over-teaching in Elmwood Park, Manville, Roxbury, Caldwell-West Caldwell, Denville, Livingston, and Bridgewater-Raritan.
Outside of teaching I play in a kickball league and I love to travel. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, baking, and spending time with my cat Jenny.
Thanks for reading about me! I love being a part of the TJS family!
