PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Read In Week: Oct 7 - 11
READ IN Week is an annual event dedicated to promoting literacy and fostering a love of reading among all age groups. This year’s celebration, from October 7 to 11, 2024, marks the 35th annual READ IN Week and highlights the crucial role reading plays in schools, libraries, workplaces, and communities.
The theme for 2024 - Reading is for Everyone!
Reading isn’t just about storybooks. READ IN is not only for children. It’s for everyone! What does reading look like to you? Following instructions? Reading a recipe? Enjoying a graphic novel or comic book? Reading the news? Looking at the weather forecast? Research? Reading for pleasure? Reading a storybook to a loved one?

Mental Illness Awareness Week
October 6th - 12th marks Mental Illness Awareness Week, a crucial time to address mental health challenges. In Canada, 1 in 5 people experience mental illness (Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, 2019), yet only a third seek treatment due to stigma and misunderstanding (Statistics Canada, 2020). This week, let's work together to increase awareness and understanding. Look for the GSACRD Voice display in your school for more insights, or visit the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health for additional resources and information. Check out the graphic below for some myth busting facts about mental illness.
Counselling Corner
We'd like to take the time to mention that we offer a range of counselling services at MCHS. Whether it be for academic or personal reasons, students can get help. See the contact information below for details.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Grade 9 Faith Retreat - Skaro Shrine
The grade 9 faith retreat at Skaro Shrine proved to be an amazing experience for students, set against the serene backdrop of this historic pilgrimage site. Founded in the 1930s after a reported apparition of the Virgin Mary, Skaro Shrine has since become a place of reflection and prayer for many. During their time there, students engaged in meaningful discussions about the Catholic faith, through interactive workshops, prayer, and guided reflections. They were able to connect deeply with their spirituality while walking the peaceful grounds. Thank you to all those who played a role in organizing this wonderful day and to all the student who attended! A special thank you to the Doug and Father Trini for making it out to lead some of the activities and support this event.
