Tidbits from the President
Tidbits from the President
Texas weather…we had to cancel last month’s meeting because of the extreme cold and today it was a sunny 70 degrees. Except for all the rain, I have loved the recent weather. But in Texas, you really can’t complain about rain, either (I’m sure we will need it soon enough). I hope that these rainy days have allowed everyone to get on with their quilt making. Minis are due, NTQF registration is about to open, there are always items needed for the booth, NICU quilts, lovies, QOV and, of course, all your personal projects. So many projects and so little time. I sometimes get frozen by the TBD list. I hope this isn’t the case for you! For me, getting together with my quilting sisters (and brother) is food for the quilt motivation soul. I hope it is for you. See you on Tuesday.
Mystery Quilt
Bonnie Hunter's Mystery Quilt is completed and the reveal is on her blog (see link below). She now has the full pattern for sale on her site. I hope to see some completed quilts soon.
Programs
Fort Worth Quilt Guild - February Program
Featuring Roxanne Lessa - Quilting Decisions – How Do I Quilt That?
We will have the pleasure of meeting Roxanne Lessa via a ZOOM meeting. Her program will provide us with a great view of her quilts as we learn how she makes quilting decisions.
Making Quilting Decisions: a practical, deep dive into ways to choose, preview and practice free motion quilting on your art quilt. Most quilters struggle with deciding how to quilt their quilts, so I developed a simple system to help.
February Workshop - Saturday -February 24th - Free-Motion Quilting Class - $35 Fee
We will have a quilting workshop with video lessons in quilting - Bring 3 or more Quilt Sandwiches and watch and complete your Quilting along with the video! Don’t miss this opportunity to learn together and upgrade your free motion skills! Registration at the February meeting. See Workshop Details on the FWQG website for more information.
We will walk through practicing free motion quilting using a video where we will stop it and do the exercises and then continue. You will have new stitches to add to your tool kit and if you have not tried it, you will learn how to free motion first by practicing the designs on paper, and then on your quilt sandwiches. If you are already free motion quilting, come help some of the beginners, and add a new pattern or two to your repertoire! We can also provide a zoom link if you prefer to attend from the comfort of your own home, but we will be in person so that we can help anyone that needs help with the process.
Fort Worth Quilt Guild - March Program
Featuring JACQUELINE LEHTO
Jacqueline Lehto is the featured speaker for our March meeting. Jackie has been quilting for over 23 years and has taught hundreds of people how to quilt in project classes, beginning to quilt classes, in junior and senior high school classes and she has taught 23 quilting camps in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Texas. You will be sure to enjoy the evening at our March meeting as she shares her wide array of quilts, which range in style from traditional to modern, and from realistic to abstract art quilts. The one thing that all her works have in common, however, is her love of bright colors. Her work has been juried into the American Quilters Society Des Moines, Iowa, the Road to California Show, The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show, and the Hoffman Fabric Challenge Traveling Exhibit. She has won Viewer’s Choice on two occasions and received the Best Use of Color award. She was awarded 3rd place in the Bed Quilt Category at the 2023 Great Wisconsin Quilt Show in Madison. We know you will be inspired and motivated as Jackie shares her wonderful and colorful trunk show and her love of quilting with us.
MARCH - APPLIPIECING WORKSHOP - $38.00
Join Jackie Lehto’s workshop to learn an interesting technique called APPLIPIECING. This method allows you to create one-of-kind art quilts with No curved piecing, but you get the beautiful look of curved piecing! It is easy-to-learn and will allow you to draw / design your own art quilts that will be all be unique and whatever you want them to be. While we will use this simple leaf pattern in the top picture that Jackie created, she will teach you how to draw your own and then you can go on to create amazing quilts. The bottom picture is another quilt Jackie designed and created using this method. This is a whimsical method that is sure to be fun, fun, fun!
Piggy Romance
Fort Worth Quilt Guild April Program
– Features an interactive program with Jonquel Jones
Join Fort Worth Quilt Guild for a fast-paced, small group collage project. We’ ll have a “Round Robin” type project where you will contribute to the art quilts going around the groups, until they are finished. Add a piece to the project and pass it on. The project is broken into little actions with just 2-5 minutes to accomplish before being passed to the left. Someone says the step and monitors the time. Everyone will continue until all the elements are placed. You can change anything while it’s in front of you.
· Whichever collage is in front of you after passing one more time is the one you get to take home and finish. Bits are just pinned on as needed to get it home. This will be a very fun interactive program!
NO WORKSHOP FOR APRIL DUE TO THE RETREAT.
Fort Worth Quilt Guild May Program
Featuring David Owen Hastings and his program: Minimal Design, Maximum Impact
May Workshop: Friday May 20 – 6 – 9 PM Evening WORKSHOP – ZOOM $45.00 per person
Fort Worth Quilt Guild June Program:
Featuring Sharon & Loren Wilhelm -“Sashings Bold and Dangerous”
Sharon is an entrepreneur of several previous companies: Country Collectibles, Sharon’s Quilt Depot and now co-owner in Quilt Ideas pattern division. She designs blocks of the month, single patterns, punch needle, coloring and embroidery patterns and more quilting designs for Loren to make out of wood. She loves to teach anything pertaining to quilting, help quilters put together colors for new quilts and make quilts to give away. Our newest adventure is to give guild programs and workshops using our vast collection of quilts.
Loren is and has been a quilter for many years making all kinds of large, small and miniature quilts. He loves to write. He has a beautiful voice and was in radio production for 20+ years (KBOX/KMEZ Dave O’Brien) and he is a large job concrete estimator. Now he is co-owner in Quilt Ideas as a pattern designer and manufacturer of the Quilt Hangers and Accessories division.
“Sashings Bold and Dangerous” How they can make or break your design.
Sometimes we get the blocks finished and we are at a stopping point trying to decide what sashing or setting to put with those blocks. Some are so old we have to be very creative to blended the old with the new. We will give you some examples of things that just happened and some that were planned with a display of quilts.
Workshop: Barn Quilt -Crayon & Embroidery
Saturday 9 – 3 PM $35.00
Sharon will guide us in using Crayons to create a barn quilt picture.

Our Mini Auction voting and prize drawing will be held at the February meeting. Hoping everyone will bring their creations and also turn out to vote for their favorites. You’ve still got a few weeks to pull something together for the prize draw.
Mini-quilts should be larger than 10” and smaller than 24”. Think: applique, English paper pieced, scaled down quilt patterns, whole cloth … Use up scraps especially all those leftover triangles!
Grace Stroud made beautiful project bags that Jonquele Jones has filled with goodies to give as prizes.

Hospitality
Mother nature is having a hard time trying to decide what to do. We have had really COLD temperatures and then temperatures in the 70s. On the really cold days is a good time to stay inside and do some sewing and on the days that are warm we can go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather.
February is a busy month. We have Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, and Black History Month and we have an extra day.
Find that recipe you have been wanting to try, make it and bring for refreshments to the guild meeting for all to enjoy.
Thank you to all that help set up and clean at the Guild meetings I appreciate your help.

BEES
** NEW **
EMBROIDERY BEE -- sponsor Wanda Edmonds
The embroidery bee is beginning to feel organized. The January meeting was on a Thursday at Wanda's house. Most of us had stitched out a Christmas design from Designs by JuJu and we discussed the effects of different thread and fabric colors. We decided to meet on the LAST Thursday of each month at 11:30 AM and rotate hostesses. Most of the meetings will be held on the north or northwest side of Fort Worth. For more information, contact Wanda at dooleymac@gmail.com or 682-560-9101 (text preferred).
The next meeting will be at Wanda's on February 29. We will discuss in-the-hoop projects and all who are able will bring examples they made.
FRAYED KNOTS
TIGHT KNOTS BEE
Start a Bee
One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!
General Guidelines
- 7-9 members. Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
- A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
- Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
- Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
- Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.

Quilt Show Booth News
I will be bringing lots of patterns for BOOTH ideas to our meeting in February.
Feel free to take home whatever you would like to make for our booth this year.
These are my patterns so after you're done I would like them back :)
Lets make this year the best ever so that we can afford the best programs
However, anything you'd like to make would be received with thanks!
Ann Houpt, Booth Chairman
Bev Ramsey Fund
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.
Lovies
If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.
Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Cook Children's. Cook's is always very grateful for the gifts.
Quilts of Valor
Quilts of Valor
The QOV National Sew Day event at the Berry Patch went very well! We had a full house with eight members and two guests in attendance. Twenty Ohio Star blocks were completed, and eight snail trail blocks were turned in. Dee Ramirez turned in a completed quilt she had been working on.
We continue to succeed with the help of our members and volunteers. The generous donations of fabric and sewing hours help us to wrap service members and veterans in comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

NICU Qulits
NICU Quilts
NICU quilts are 36”x 36” prewashed quilts that the guild currently donates to JPS hospital. JPS has also asked for adult size quilts. Other items accepted are lovies (10” x 10” or 12” x 12”), resolution squares, ostomy bag covers and post-mastectomy heart pillows. Adult quilt sizes requested are Lap (39” x 48”), Throw (52” x 60”) and Twin (60” x 75”). More information on these is on the following website:
https://www.jpshealthnet.org/community/volunteeropportunities/other-opportunities-to-serve Recently NICU Co-Chairpersons Carolyn Hughes and Judi Janes delivered 33 items to JPS. All were made by members of the Tight Knots Quilt Bee as part of their community service. Included were 19 NICU quilts, 9 crocheted blankets and 5 quilted throws. There is a continuing need for these items at JPS. Please consider donating to this cause. It can be a great use of scraps or of that fabric you wonder why you bought.

Help your Newsletter Editors !!!
After working with Smore for a while, we have run into limitations of the formatting available to us. It is easiest if the information is sent either as text or JPG pictures. We can attach pdf documents to the newsletter, but they will appear at the end of the newsletter and will be downloaded to your device (better if done from a laptop/desktop). DOC files which contain text only will be copied into the newsletter, but most of the formatting will be lost.
