Message from Nurse Melissa
Dear Hopewell Families,
I wanted to let you all know that my last day at Hopewell will be this Friday, October 4th. I will be returning to Children's Mercy. It was a very difficult decision to make, but it was the best one for my family. I had no idea the impact Hopewell students, staff, and families would have on my life when I helped open the building in 2019. I have so many wonderful memories. Thank you for entrusting your children to my care. I do not take that privilege lightly. It was an absolute joy and my pleasure. I will miss everyone so much! Once my position is filled, the information will be listed in the newsletter. Thank you!

Welcome to the Hopewell Family
Welcome our newest staff member Leah Stafford, School Nurse.
I am Leah Stafford. I’ve been a nurse in the hospital setting for 9 years spending the last 4 in the emergency department! I have 2 beautiful daughters that are 5 and 6. My husband and I just celebrated our 9-year wedding anniversary. We have a golden retriever named Peach from super Mario! I look forward to spending time with all the kiddos and getting to know them and their families!
Hopewell is excited to have Leah join the Hopewell family starting October 14th.
From Our Art Teacher
I will be starting a new project with 4th grade soon in which we will be using plastic bags and newspapers. If you have any extra of these you'd like to part with, I would love if you could donate them to the art room for our artwork! Thank you. 🙂

Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15. It began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Johnson and was expanded to a month by President Reagan 20 years later in 1988. The month-long celebration provides more time to properly recognize the significant contributions Hispanic/Latino Americans have made in the United States.
Hispanic Heritage Month does not cover one single month but instead begins in the middle of September and ends in the middle of October. The timeframe of this month is significant because many Central American countries celebrate their independence days within these dates, beginning on September 15 with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. By aligning with these independence dates, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the resilience and determination of the Hispanic community.
Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the unique voices and experiences of Hispanic/Latino Americans and recognize their history, journeys, and achievements. Through these celebrations, we can all help to inspire younger generations and bring communities together.
As we continue to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, let's take a look at diversity in literature...
Why does diversity in books matter? https://www.colorincolorado.org/article/why-diverse-books-matter-mirrors-and-windows
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we asked staff to bring in artifacts to showcase in our display. Many thanks to Miss Gurrola (Gr. 3) for her El Salvadorian clothing and Mexican pottery, Mrs. Anderson (Instructional Coach) for her Columbian and Puerto Rican casitas, tapestry and other artifacts and Mrs. Talbert (ELD) for her lotteria game and Mexican Lele fabric doll.
Artifacts Needed
Hopewell is asking for help collecting artifacts representing the following holidays to be on display November - January. If you have items to loan us for our holiday display, please give to Mrs. Talbert in room 111. Items will be return. Thank you!

School Hours: 9:10am - 4:10pm
Arrival/Breakfast: 8:50am - 9:10am
*Student may enter the building at 8:50am
Breakfast is served 8:50am - 9:10am.
Dismissal Starts: 4:00pm
Attendance, Absence, Lateness
Every child is urged to form excellent habits regarding attendance and promptness. A good start to the day helps foster a positive attitude. If your child is absent, please call the school office (816)359-4410 before 9:10am. If you fail to report the absence or lateness, our attendance messenger will call out at 10:00am to notify you that your child is not in school. This is a practice we’ve instituted to ensure the safe arrival of our children.
Absences or lateness may also be reported through your infinite campus parent portal.
Student Dismissal Plans, Transportation Day-to-Day Changes
If your student is going to have different transportation, a phone call or email from the parent/guardian must accompany the request. Please contact the office prior to 3:00pm to request a change in transportation. Changes to ride an alternative bus will only be issued for a change in daycare or for the safety of the student. If an alternative person is checking out your student, the person must have their ID scanned.
Students being picked up prior to the end of the school day, please arrive in the office prior to 3:30pm. Parent/Guardians who arrive after 3:50pm, will need to join the car rider line or wait until dismissal begins for their child to be called out of class.
If your child is a bus rider, it is imperative that we plan for any transportation changes prior to dismissal. Buses leave once they are loaded.
Transportation App
First View Bus App for Families
All students scan their badges as they board the bus, giving you access to live updates as to the location of your child's bus and the anticipated time in which the bus will arrive at your stop. This is especially helpful when buses become delayed while in route for various reasons. Check out the information below to get set up!
If you have questions or experience difficulty in setting this up, please contact the Hopewell Office.

Family Webinar Series
The next episode of the Family Webinar Series entitled Mental Health and Resilience will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 6:00-7:00 PM. The title of the webisode is Sexual Harassment and Violence Prevention and will feature Brandy Williams, Director of Education for the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA). Brandy will give an overview of the presentations all 6-12 grade students will have the opportunity to view about that topic.
Families have the option to opt-out their student from the presentation. Before doing so, we hope that parents/guardians will consider viewing this webinar to learn more about the content and ask questions of the organization that produced the material and trained the trainers. If the presentation in your school takes place prior to the webinar on October 22, family members can view last year’s presentation (there were two last year: one focused specifically on the middle school presentations and the other on the high school presentation) by visiting the Student and Family Support page, scrolling down to Mental Health and Healthy Living Resources, and expanding the Family Webinar Series section. All past webisodes can be viewed here (along with the webisode on the Signs of Suicide program, for those whose SOS programs are coming up), along with the full webisode descriptions.
To register for the webisode on Oct. 22, click here. Please contact Dr. Schuerman with questions and with topic ideas for future webisodes!

PTA Clothing Center
The Park Hill School District PTA runs a clothing center that provides free, gently used clothing, plus new socks and underwear to district students. Please visit our Facebook page or the PTA Clothing Center website for updated information.
The PTA Clothing Center serves all Park Hill School District students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The PTA asks you to bring proof that you are currently enrolled in the Park Hill district. This could be a student ID, dated letter from a principal or social worker, class schedule, or enrollment form. You can also show us the district portal with student information in it.
Donations are welcome at the Clothing Center anytime, year-round. There is a blue bin in front of the garage of the clothing center, which is at 8009 N Atkins, just south of the Gerner Family Early Education Center. Please make sure your donations are clean, in good condition and bagged in kitchen-sized bags that the volunteers can lift.
PBIS
Soaring to Success
We believe it is our job to teach our children expectations just like we would teach the curriculum. Through Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), we have developed a framework that sets clear and consistent language throughout the building.
Each week, a Hawk from each class is recognized for being an outstanding Hawk and Soaring to Success! They receive a certificate and get their picture on a bulletin board in our main hall.

Birthday Favors
Approved Birthday Favors:
Students may bring a birthday treat or favor to school to share with their classmates, as long as they come from our list of treats that contain none of the eight (8) major allergens - milk, wheat, egg, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish.
Thank you for understanding that all classroom treats must come from this list because we do not have the staff capacity to check for allergens that could threaten the health of some students.
