Wild Cat ROAR!
Steuart W. Weller Elementary Weekly Newsletter
A Message from the Principal:
November 17, 2024
Dear Weller Families:
Thank you parents, for helping to keep our students safe by using the car loop in the morning.
Following safety procedures as adults helps our students understand the importance of following safety expectations at school.
LCPS Reading Program:
At our last PTO meeting, Wes Strayer from the Reading/Language Arts Department presented on the Virginia Literacy Program, the Science of Reading, what reading looks like in LCPS, and parent resources.
The Elementary Reading & Writing Office has shared resources to support families. An overview document has been created for each grade level. On the overview document, parents can find overview information for each module in HMH Into Reading, which is our core resource for literacy instruction. Additionally on the overview document, families will find links to parent-friendly SOL breakdowns, and links to Virginia Literacy Partnership (VLP) resources for supporting literacy at home. You can find the links below for each grade level.
Accreditation:
According to the new Virginia accreditation standards, we are a school that is considered to be On Track. Our rating is 88.1. In order to be a school that is identified as Distinguished, we needed a rating of 90. This year our focus is on reading. This includes a new LCPS reading curriculum, supporting more students through reading interventions, and working together with families to support students as they become stronger readers.
We are committed to becoming a school that is rated as Distinguished because this means that our students are growing and performing at a high level in reading, math, science, and attendance!
Helping Those in Need:
As the holidays approach, please consider donating a gift card to Target or Walmart to support our families in need of assistance. Visit this site to make your donation.
We hope you had a great weekend!
Respectfully yours,
Julia Burton, Principal

Through the program, students have created artwork that you then can have reproduced onto a variety of keepsake products. The products range from magnets to mugs and start at just $6.00.
Complete details on the program have been sent home, so please check your children’s take home folders. The online store will close on November 26 and the purchased items will be distributed the week before our winter break. Proceeds from the program will be used to help Mrs. Burger (art teacher) purchase new art panels. For more information on Original Works please visit their website at www.originalworks.com.
