Postsecondary Readiness Tips for Families
As we continue to support our children on their educational journey, it's essential to start thinking about postsecondary readiness, even for our youngest learners. In the following weeks we’ll share valuable tips for families of students from kindergarten through 8th grade to help prepare them for the future. Postsecondary readiness is a journey that begins early! By nurturing skills, interests, and aspirations, we can empower our children to achieve their goals. Thank you for your continued support in your child's education!
For Kindergarten to 2nd Grade: Building Foundations
Encourage Curiosity: Foster a love for learning by encouraging questions and exploration. Take trips to museums or nature walks to spark interest in various subjects.
Read Together Daily: Reading enhances vocabulary and comprehension skills. Choose a mix of fiction and non-fiction books to develop diverse interests.
Introduce Basic Skills: Practice foundational skills such as counting, basic math operations, and writing. Use fun activities like games and songs to make learning enjoyable.
Anxious Generation
Several guardians and staff members are participating in the book study, Anxious Generation. Each week we’ll share insights from the book and the group’s conversations.
Chapter 2: What Children Need to Do in Childhood: "Children need opportunities for unstructured play, meaningful social interactions, and controlled exposure to manageable challenges in order to build the resilience and emotional intelligence that will carry them through life."— The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt
Food for Thought: Haidt argues that childhood is a time for exploration, learning, and building resilience through meaningful experiences. Unfortunately, in today’s world, children are often shielded from risks and are not given the freedom to develop these critical skills. Unstructured play and social interactions, which once were natural parts of childhood, have been replaced by over-scheduling, screen time, and overprotective parenting. Think about the balance we strike between protecting children from harm and allowing them the space to experience and navigate the challenges that help them grow emotionally strong. How can we create environments where children feel safe to take risks and learn from their mistakes?
