Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that our school is on the traditional lands of the Dena'ina People of Upper Cook Inlet. For thousands of years, the Dena'ina People have continued to be the stewards of this land. ASD is committed to diversity and inclusion, and it is with honor and respect that we recognize all Indigenous people who live and learn in our community.
From the Principal
Alpenglow Snow Leopards,
Spring is definitely in the air. The snow is starting to melt. The days are getting longer and warmer; however, we are not quite there yet. As a reminder, please ensure your child continues to dress appropriately for school and the unpredictable spring weather. It is still too cold, and there is too much snow for students not to wear their coats to school (and during recess). Flip-flop style shoes are a safety hazard, and spaghetti strap/tank top shirts are not allowed at school. It is safe to say that pulling out the rain boots is ok as puddles are beginning to form.
With the nice weather we have been having, there has been more lingering after school. I see parents talking with other parents and children playing. What a wonderful time to connect with the community. Please remember that at 3:45, teachers are no longer supervising children. Students who walk home need to go directly home at dismissal. The playground reopens at 4:30 for community use. Also, keep in mind we also have more children walking or riding their bikes to and from school. Please abide by all traffic laws and staff members, crossing guards, and parent volunteers on duty. Your attention to these details is for the safety of our students and staff of Alpenglow Elementary School.
Here’s looking forward to sunny, warm days ahead and a smooth and successful close to the school year.

Filling out this survey does not commit you to any decision; it just lets me know what you’re thinking now and helps in planning. Please note that this survey does not register your student for school next year. You will still have to fill out online registration later this year. I appreciate your time. Please make sure you check your email regularly for updates.

AK STAR & Alaska Science Assessment
Another season of State testing is almost over. I am impressed with how seriously our 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade students are taking their testing. I know they are going to do well. I appreciate our teachers and staff for their flexibility in our testing schedule. I am also extremely thankful to our fabulous PTA for providing a healthy snack for all our students during AK STAR & AK Science testing days. Thank you for making our 2023-24 testing season such a success. The AK STAR ELA, MATH, and AK Science Assessment results will be released at the end of this school year.

Month of the Military Child
April is Military Child Month. Month of the Military Child was established in 1986 by Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger to honor the unique challenges and sacrifices military children face due to their parents’ service. The month celebrates military children and brings awareness to the needs of military children in all areas.
There are more than 1.6 million military children around the world. About 10 percent of ASD's student population is connected to military families. At Alpenglow, over 50 percent of our community is connected to the military.
Purple, the official color of MOMC, represents the support of all military branches. Air Force, Space Force, Navy and Coast Guard-blue, Army-green, Marine-red. They are all thought to combine as a single color, purple.
These young, brave heroes stand in the steadfast support of their parents, who risk their lives to protect our country's freedom.
Dandelion is the official flower of the military child. They can take root and flower practically anywhere the wind blows them. Military children are much like the dandelion as they are uprooted and replanted worldwide.
Show your support for Alpenglow’s military students on
Monday, April 15 - Purple Up Day. Students, faculty, and staff wear purple. This activity is nationwide and is participated in by schools, childcare centers, government agencies, and community agencies.
Tuesday, April 16 - Let’s Cheer for the Red, White, and Blue - wear red, white, and blue.
Wednesday, April 17 - Can’t Hide Our Military Pride - Wear camouflage.
Thursday, April 18 - At Ease - wear pajamas
Friday, April 19 - No School
Attendance - Absences, Tardies, & Leaving Early
A missed school day, arriving late, or leaving early is a lost opportunity for students to learn. There is a direct correlation between students who attend school regularly and higher academic achievement levels. Students can miss no more than 17 days of school per year. Those tardies and leaving early add up. This may seem like a lot, but it's less than two absences per month.
If your student will be absent, please call 742-3300

Administrative Professionals and Staff Appreciation
Each year, administrative professionals are recognized for their skills and loyalty. Here at Alpenglow, we celebrate the talents of Therese Carroll and Krista Peterson. They ensure our daily routines run smoothly. Please join us and show your appreciation when stopping by the office.
Speaking of appreciation, the first week in May is Staff Appreciation Week. Now is the time to personally thank your student’s teachers for their dedication and commitment throughout the year.
I want to personally thank all the teachers and staff at Alpenglow Elementary School for their countless hours of hard work and dedication to educating our children. We have committed and talented teachers who work daily to open students’ minds to ideas, knowledge, and dreams. I am proud to be a part of this fantastic community. Every week should be Teacher Appreciation Week ☺
The first week in May is National School Nurses Week. Our fabulous school nurses, Lindsey Lawton and Amanda Gabbard, play a significant role in influencing the physical, mental, emotional, and well-being of our students and staff at Alpenglow. They are an invaluable resource for staff, students, and their families. Thank you, Nurse Lindsey and Nurse Amanda, for all you do.
Lost and Found
The last day of class is Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Ask your child/children to stop by Lost and Found for missing or lost items. At the end of the year, we launder and donate them.
Join The Team
Would you like to work at Alpenglow? We need you! We need Noon Supervisors to supervise and assist students during lunch and recess to ensure student safety. The application is HERE.
We are also in great need of Substitute Teachers. Follow this LINK for more details and qualifications.
Please contact Mrs. Demetree-Trombley if you have any questions or plan to apply.
Finish the Year Strong
The quarter of school will be busy, engaging, exciting, and educational. As the end of the year draws closer, we often see an increase in poor choices and disruptive behaviors. Help us finish the year on a positive note by talking with your child about making good choices.

Battle of the Books - 24/25
Good news!
If you have a student interested in Battle of the Books for next school year (2024/2025), the tentative book lists are here! Your student would read the books for the grade they will be in next school year (for example, current 5th and 6th grade students would read the Middle School books).
Summer is a great time to get ahead on reading the books for a strong Battle of the Books team in the fall. I have attached the lists for families who are interested. I will also have lists available in the library for interested students.
Please reach out if you have any questions,
Lisa Bunag
