HILLSIDE'S FREE LITTLE ART GALLERY
Shown contributing to the Free Little Art Gallery at Hillside Elementary School is second grader Ahana Narasimhan.
Anyone who needs a little art in their life, can now stop by Hillside Elementary School’s Free Little Art Gallery! Hillside’s Free Little Art Gallery is similar to that of a Free Little Library, however instead of taking and leaving books, anyone can take or leave art.
“It runs on the philosophy that anyone can be an artist and anyone can own art!” explained elementary art teacher Melissa Mondanaro, who saw ideas for little art galleries online and was inspired to bring one to Hillside. She proposed the idea of implementing one to the school’s PTA. The PTA president was able to find a grandparent who was happy to build the structure and when finished, Mondanaro painted it. The beautiful handmade, hand-painted wooden gallery box was installed at Hillside this spring in honor of Youth Art Month.
While it’s mostly utilized by Hillside students, Hillside’s Free Little Art Gallery is open to the public and anyone can stop by to drop off art, or take a piece home. Mondanaro, who serves as the “curator” and “content manager” for the little gallery, notes that appropriate artwork can be anything that would brighten someone’s day, but should be kind and safe for all age groups. The artwork must also be no bigger than 4 x 6 inches to fit on the easels. If students want to sign their art, they should only use their first name.
“The gallery holds about six pieces at a time, which get filled and emptied almost daily. Art has ranged from rainbows, to animals, to inspirational quotes. It has been wonderful to see the students take ownership and keep it going throughout the year!” said Ms. Mondanaro.
ANNIE JIANG ACCEPTED TO ALL-STATE ORCHESTRA
Congratulations to Livingston High School ninth grader Annie Jiang who has achieved a milestone by being accepted into the All-State Orchestra of New Jersey. This year, Annie stands out as the only student from Livingston High School to earn this honor.
The All-State Orchestra brings together the most talented young musicians from across New Jersey, providing them with an opportunity to perform at the highest level of the state for high schoolers. Annie's acceptance into the All-State Orchestra reflects the quality of LHS music program and brings pride to the Livingston High School community.
