Fantastic Start!
We are off to a fantastic start to the school year! We have been working hard on learning routines and procedures that help our school days run smoothly. We have also had our first round of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments in grades K-5 as well as the first DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills) assessments in grades K-5. Reports will be sent home soon.
During the month of August, I was able to visit several classrooms to read to students. This is one of my favorite things to do with classes, as it helps me build a strong and positive relationship with our kids. I'm also working hard to either refresh my memory with students' names or learn the names of those who are new to our school. With over 650 students, I have my work cut out for me. However, it is important to me to be able to call your child by his or her name as we interact throughout the school year. I absolutely adore our students, and I can't say enough about how proud I am of them. Thank you for sending us your BESt! It is a blessing to serve your family.
Have a great Labor Day weekend!

The BES Pledge
Did you know that each morning, in addition to the Pledge of Allegiance, our students and staff recite the BES Pledge as part of our morning routine? Our pledge includes elements of our 3 expectations to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. In addition, we conclude with a promise to be our best selves as we start the day. We love our school, and our school pledge is one more way we show it!
PBIS Assemblies
We had our first PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports) assembly in August. Students were treated to welcome music by the AHS Pep Band, and teachers participated in an entertaining skit/game to help our students learn more about the word of the month: RESPECT. We enjoy getting all of our students together once a month to focus on how we can be the very BESt school we can be.
Great Southeast Pollinator Census
Some of our students were able to participate in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census this month. The sunny weather and perfect temperatures attracted bees, butterflies, and spiders to a variety of plants in our garden. The students counted each time an insect landed on their plant with the final total of 457 insect landings in 30 minutes.

Free & Reduced Meal Applications
Meal applications must be submitted each school year.
If you have not completed a free & reduced meal application, please take this opportunity to complete one today. To help ensure the continuation of meal benefits, households must complete an online application by September 13, 2024.
Visit our website or pick up a paper application from your school cafeteria manager.
Public Library Access
Thanks to the PLAY Student Library Card and a partnership with the Piedmont Regional Library System, our students can use their student ID numbers for free access to books and online resources. Visit https://www.barrow.k12.ga.us/community/play-library-card to get started!

Classroom Newsletters
For more specific information related to your child's classroom news, please be sure to check out the weekly newsletter his/her teacher publishes. Hard copies will come home each Friday, and most of our teachers share an electronic version via Remind. We hope the weekly updates help you feel "in the know" with what is going on in your child's classroom. There are a lot of great things happening at BES!
