Parent Engagement Raffle
We know families already love staying connected to their children and what is happening at school. We appreciate your involvement and want to show it. Starting this month, we will be doing a random giveaway related to your child's Friday reflection. Your child will be bringing home a paper copy and there will be a place for you to sign. After looking at the reflection, please sign it and have your child return it to their Advisory teacher. You will be entered into a drawing to win 2 season long athletic passes for the 25-26 school year, thanks to our Bay Port Athletic Department. Each Friday reflection that is returned and signed between Nov. 15th and Dec. 18th will be a separate entry. We will do a random drawing on December 18th and contact that winner. Thank you again for your engagement in your child's school experience.

Digital Safety Feature: Home WIFI
Creating a safe and balanced digital environment is critical to our children's well-being in today's ever-connected world. Home internet providers are not required to provide screen time and content filtering capabilities as part of a regular internet service, and directions on how to do so can sometimes be hard to find.
Controlling content and screen time at the WIFI router level
One way to manage screen time and filter content is at the WIFI router level. Parents should be able to get administrator-level access of their router through a browser or an app that allows you to filter harmful content, pause your internet for the whole house or for individual devices and set screen time limits on devices. Here are links to the content and screen management services of some of the local internet providers. If yours is not listed, contact them regarding how to access the information and set it up at your home:
For more information, please contact Kelly Koller, Bay View Technology Integration Specialist, kellkoll@hssdschools.org

The Power of Making Connections While Reading
Reading a book is like going on an adventure: it opens up new worlds, introduces us to unique characters, and makes us think about different ideas. But what if I told you that there’s a way to make this adventure even more exciting and meaningful? Making connections while you read is one of the best ways to deepen your understanding, make the story stick with you, and even come up with fresh ideas!
What Does "Making Connections" Mean?
Making connections is when you relate what you’re reading to something else you know. This could be a personal experience, something you’ve read in another book, or even a bigger idea about the world. These connections help you interact with the story in a way that goes beyond just understanding the plot or memorizing facts. Here are the three types of connections you can make:
Text-to-Self Connections: Relating the story to your own life.
Text-to-Text Connections: Linking ideas or themes between different books or stories.
Text-to-World Connections: Connecting the story to real-world events or larger themes.
Why Are Connections So Important?
When you make connections, you’re not just reading passively; you’re actively thinking about the story and how it relates to you. Here’s why that’s powerful:
It Makes Reading More Engaging
Have you ever noticed how much more interesting a story feels when you can relate to it? By making connections, you’re bringing your own experiences into the book, which makes the story feel more real and exciting. It Helps You Understand Themes and Big Ideas
Some books have complex themes or messages that might not be obvious at first. Making connections can help you see these deeper meanings. For example, if you’re reading The Hunger Games and you connect the idea of survival and competition to real-world issues, you might start thinking about fairness, teamwork, or even inequality in a new way.It Builds Empathy
Making connections allows you to “walk in the shoes” of characters who may live very different lives from yours. This helps build empathy, making you more understanding of people with different experiences, backgrounds, or viewpoints. It Sparks New Ideas
Connections can lead to amazing new ideas! By combining what you read with what you already know, you might discover new ways of looking at things. For example, a story about overcoming challenges could inspire you to find creative ways to tackle a problem in your own life.

It's really a safe space for kids to come hang out together with some supervision.
PREVIOUS NEWS
Parking Pick-Up/Drop-Off Reminder
We have designated 12 visitor parking spots near the main entrance. Please utilize these during the school day instead of using the circle driveway. In the event of an emergency, we need first responders to have unobstructed access. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
A Message from our Bay View Student Services Team
Due to the increase in virtual counseling appointments scheduled during the school day, we want to make sure we can provide adequate private space. If your child will be having scheduled virtual sessions with an outside provider, we would like your partnership in obtaining a signed Release of Information in order to assist your child with any technology or connection issues that may occur during their appointments.
We ask that you provide at least a 3 day notice per each virtual appointment in order to ensure that we have adequate and private space available to your child. If you notify the school the day of an appointment, we cannot guarantee an adequate space or that the message will be received in time to call your child out of class. We know that many appointments are already scheduled, but if you are planning on scheduling future appointments during the school day, we would appreciate it, if possible, avoiding Monday appointments. We do not have the same spaces available as we do on other days. If you need help finding the best time for your child to have scheduled appointments, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your help and partnership.

STUDENT PICK-UP PROTOCOL
If you are picking a student up during the school day, you must come into the main office and sign the student out with your Driver's License. If someone other than you or your emergency contacts is picking up your student, please contact the office to let them know who is picking your student up. Students are not allowed to leave during school hours via bike or walking without prior approval from the main office and Principal.
HEALTH ROOM PROTOCOL
If your student is not feeling well, they need to follow protocol and come to the health room to report their illness prior to contacting home. Students should not be using their iPad to email a parent or texting a parent to pick them up. This will eliminate the spread of illnesses to other students and will make the office aware of students being picked up prior to parent arrival.
