Student Support Updates from Mrs. Werling
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
In October students learned what bullying is and how to recognize, refuse, and report bullying. We focused on making safe, healthy choices during Red Ribbon Week. Beginning early November through early December students will be transitioning to Unit 2: Emotion Management skills within our school-wide SEL curriculum, Second Step. In this unit students will learn to use behavioral and contextual clues to label and identify emotions in themselves and others. Students will be helped to process emotions through identifying causes, signs, and consequences of emotions as well as how their emotions relate to their thoughts, actions, and past experiences. The lessons in this unit will also teach students evidence based strategies to manage strong feelings including behavioral techniques to feel calm, distract, and relax (slow breathing, taking a break, talking to a friend or trusted adult) and cognitive techniques such as altering their thoughts (rethinking a situation) and practicing positive self-talk (helpful thoughts) in an emotional situation. The Student Support Advisor/School Counselor will also be visiting each classroom for a guidance lesson on emotional regulation this month that compliments what students are learning in Second Step Unit 2 lessons.
You may review the respective links for each grade level for an update related to the Second Step lessons within each grade level.

Picking up a Student Early
If you need to pick up your child early, we will need to see a valid drivers license in order to verify that you are a legal guardian. If you give permission for someone else to pick up your child, they should be listed in your emergency contacts on skyward.
Visitors
Visitors may come in and visit a classroom if it has been previously arranged. All visitors must bring their driver's license. Any potential volunteers must complete a background check through our office before volunteering.
If you need to drop something off for your child, you may label it and leave it in the foyer for our staff to deliver. If you need to drop off medication, you will buzz into the office and visit our nurse.
Treats for Birthdays and Class Parties
In order to ensure we are keeping our students with food allergies safe, you must send in food for birthdays and parties that are purchased from the store and prepackaged. Ingredient lists must be visible on the packaging. If ingredients are not listed on the package, the food items will not be shared and will be sent home with your child.
