THE GRAND OPENING OF SEVEN POINTS SHOPPING CENTER
The year is 1957 – exactly 67 years ago. It is mid-August, and the news that the whole town has been awaiting is finally published in the weekly newspaper, the Florence Herald. Yes, it’s finally time for the grand opening of Seven Points Shopping Center. (See the attached flyer.) As one travels north on Wood Avenue, this new shopping mecca is just a skip and a jump from the traffic light at the intersection of seven streets. [Today, it’s six streets since turns aren’t allowed to or from Howell Street.] So, which exciting stores are available in this new way to shop? There are chain emporiums such as W.T. Grant, Kroger Grocery, Western Auto and Thom McCann. There are stores which have already been in operation in other sections of Florence such as Ory’s Washeteria & Cleaners and First Federal Savings & Loan. In all, there are fifteen (15) merchants to serve the public. To lure all of Florence and beyond to attend the grand opening, there are free prizes, souvenirs, family entertainment and 600 free parking spaces. Yes, the idea of a stand-alone shopping center was fairly new in 1957 – just as the idea of a covered shopping center (a mall) was fairly new when Regency Square Mall [today, Florence Mall] opened twenty years later in 1978.
