Safety and Security
We have collected feedback from students, parents, and staff about the recent lockdowns. Below is a summary of that feedback and the actions EHS will take to improve safety and security.
Feedback:
The safety protocols help keep students and staff safe but no protocol can account for each unique situation.
Response:
Staff will need to use their best judgement to make decisions in crisis situations. We will continue to train staff on the protocols, but we will also participate in table-top training exercises that will give staff experience with making judgement calls in a variety of practice scenarios.
Feedback:
It would be helpful for students and parents to know the standing safety protocols that are used everyday at EHS.
Response:
All people entering the building are screened at the doors and secure vestibules are used to control access to the building. Classroom doors remained locked and closed during classes. The School Resource Officer and Campus Security Monitor continually monitor the building. School staff monitor common areas and the parking lot before school, at lunch, and after school.
Feedback:
Communication is critical.
Response:
To keep parents better informed, teachers were directed to have students message their parents as soon as it is safe to do so. School principals also standardized how they communicate to staff during crisis situations to keep staff better informed. The LCSD1 Community Relations department also made adjustments to how they communicate about these events with parents.
Feedback:
Some students struggle emotionally during and after a lockdown. Students may also benefit from a debrief after the event.
Response:
We are working to make sure that the students that stay at school after an event have a chance to process with an adult. We are also working to prepare resources that parents can use to talk about these events with their students at home. We are determining the best way to debrief with students when they return to school after an event.
Feedback:
Students might benefit from additional training.
Response:
We talk with students about sheltering and evacuating but most lockdown drills train students how to shelter. We are looking for ways to coach students on when it would be more appropriate to evacuate instead. We are also working with law enforcement to find ways to educate students on the sights and sounds they may experience during a lockdown (what law enforcement giving orders sounds like, what law enforcement in tactical gear looks like, etc.).
Feedback:
Parents and the community are eager to help.
Response:
East High School is a part of an amazing community as confirmed by an outpouring of support and offers to help. We are exploring ways that parents and the community can help....stay tuned!
