Broad Run High School's Newsletter October, 2022
Principal's Message
Spartan Families,
We are over halfway through the first quarter, and we are all settled from the opening of school. I am happy to say Broad Run is fully staffed with licensed and classified positions. Our students have transitioned into the school year well. Observations of our use of E-Hall Pass and Cell Phone Caddies have been positive.
Thank you to everyone for a good homecoming week in September. Thank you also to our World Languages Department and others who have placed impactful information and decorations throughout our school as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Congratulations to the seniors who have been named National Merit Semi Finalists and Commended Students. Please check out the BRHS Twitter @BroadRunHS as we celebrate our seniors through recogniction of sports, scholarships, and more.
Some final reminders: Our Annual Hall of Fame Night is October 7. We will give the PSAT October 12 to students in grades 9-11. The end of the first quarter is October 28.
Thank you again for your support as part of the Broad Run community.

Project Graduation
What is Project Graduation?
Project Graduation is a celebration for the newly graduated seniors from 11:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m.
The All-Night-Grad-Party for CLASS OF 2023 will be on JUNE 1, 2023 and will take place at Broad Run High School.
This event provides a safe, drug-free, alcohol-free, supervised environment for the new graduates. The goal of Project Graduation is to keep the new graduates safe on what is statistically one of the most dangerous nights of their lives. In the past, students have enjoyed games, inflatables, sports, photos, music, many prizes, and much more. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are provided for the graduates throughout the night. It takes over 50 adult volunteers to run this event the night after graduation. However, it takes a committee of dedicated parents leading up to the event date to raise funds, to plan and organize what is required to have an All-Night-Grad-Party for the newly graduated seniors.
How Can You Support Project Grad? The Project Graduation committee holds fundraisers throughout the school year to raise funds for this event.

Broad Run Welcomes German Exchange Students
The last decade has seen a significant increase in international students and the growing popularity of secondary school exchange programs in the United States. Broad Run has become part of that experience. We have agreed to participate in an exchange program with 15 students from Leipzig, Germany, providing the opportunity for students to experience a different culture and language. Additionally, this opportunity allows students to learn through interactions and conversations.
Here are some components of the exchange experience:
German Student presentation of food, sports, music.
· Visits and observations in classrooms
· Field trip to Jamestown
· Field trip to Washington DC
· Overnight trip to New York
· Excursion to Busch Gardens
Thanks to Anne Friedrich for organizing this event and the World Language Department and Mr. Runfola for their support. This visit, in its early stages, is fostering friendships that are proving memorable. This visitation has allowed German and Broad Run students to experience different cultures and perspectives, including new traditions and customs. Fully embracing new cultures has given our students and faculty the opportunity to embrace and learn from cultural differences.
Black Student Union is ALL about Inclusion
The Black Student Union (BSU) held its first club meeting on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. We had over 200 students in attendance and over 115 students that have made a commitment to the club’s mission. BSU aims to become a positive voice in Broad Run and the community and bring members together through identity, education and service.
BSU meets every second Wednesday of the month during Spartan Seminar in the Cafeteria and every fourth Wednesday of the month at 9:00 a.m. in the Career Center.
It is important that we share that ALL are welcome to join the Black Student Union. We are about inclusion, not exclusion.
How can you support BSU, you ask? BSU will be selling t-shirts very soon and we would appreciate you purchasing 1 or more to help our endeavors for the 2022- 2023 school year.

Recognition of National School Bus Safety Week
Broad Run is pleased to announce that we will be recognizing our bus drivers and attendants during the week of October 17th – 21st, during National School Bus Safety Week, for their continuous efforts in transporting our students to and from Broad Run safely.
This is how we plan to celebrate the week:
· Provide the drivers and attendants with Broad Run spirit wear bags.
· Display announcement, “We appreciate our School Bus Drivers, Transport Drivers and Attendants,” on our marquee.
· Have staff members, students, band and cheerleaders in front of the school greeting buses and celebrating our drivers/attendants.
Broad Run bus drivers play a vital role with our school, a role that calls for the transportation of hundreds of students in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner. Join us in this celebration recognizing an invaluable part of our team.
