Happy Diwali!
Diwali 2024, celebrated on November 1st, marks the festival of lights, one of the most significant Hindu festivals celebrated across India and by Indian communities worldwide. Known for symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, Diwali is celebrated by illuminating homes with diyas (oil lamps), candles, and vibrant rangoli designs. Families come together to share sweets, exchange gifts, and enjoy fireworks that light up the night sky. Many people also honor Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, through prayers and rituals, hoping for a prosperous year ahead. Diwali’s festive energy and focus on togetherness make it a joyful time to celebrate culture and community.
Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends on the first Sunday in November each year. This means clocks “fall back” by one hour at 2:00 a.m. local time, making it 1:00 a.m. again. As a result, you gain an extra hour of sleep, and daylight in the mornings increases, though it gets darker earlier in the evenings.
Community Safety
While October was National Bullying Prevention Month, we would like to remind students, parents, and staff that creating and promoting a safe and supportive school environment is always our priority. In our school environment, anyone can seek help or report a concern by contacting a staff member or the school.
Also, in our community the Skokie Police Department Police to Citizen Portal provides various services, including online incident reporting for events that happen outside of school. Thank you for your partnership in the safety of our students, staff, and community.
The Highland PTA would like to give a big THANK YOU to all of our families who decorated trunks and donated candy for last weekend's Trunk-or-Treat event. It was a SPOOKY success! We had many happy Highland "trunk or treaters" because of YOU. CONGRATULATIONS to the Flora Family (Trunk #2) on being voted BEST TRUNK!
Our next restaurant night is at Culver's on Nov. 7! If your child would like to be a server while there, just tell someone at the counter and they can put on an apron and serve the food to the customers! Don't forget to mention Highland when you order so we get 20% back to our school. Thanks for supporting the PTA!
