Short Avenue IB Learners Strive to Be...
Mr. Lamb's Updates
Happy Weekend Short Avenue Families and Friends!
I am very proud of our community and of my staff. For me, this has been a very hectic week. The only day I was able to be on site for a full day was Tuesday and I was gone all of Wednesday. There is so much that happens on a school site on a given day that it is very hard to be away and not to have your fingers on the pulse of what is happening. To make this work and to keep all safe and productive there has to be trust in the systems and trust in the people. I am honored to say that even though I felt scattered and stretched and pulled, this was a successful week because of our amazing team and community!
I know and acknowledge that we are not perfect. My staff and our school are great but that doesn’t mean all that happens throughout the year is perfect. As adults we know that we need to be resilient. For our children this is a skill to learn. I deeply understand this. As you all know, my own children are in college. They have a variety of professors, teaching assistants, labs, and a 10 week quarter system. There is much that might not be perfect. Through their elementary, middle school, and high school journey they were able to build that resilience and now they are successfully navigating what life is throwing at them. It is not easy. We do not like watching our children struggle but the struggle is beneficial.
Finally, our push to 100% Short Ave with the Parent Portal continues - we are over 90% now. This is so important because much that the district is rolling out for parents to respond to is accessed through the Parent Portal.
“Choices” is open - for our 5th grade families this is one option to selecting a middle school program for your child. How do you apply? Through the Parent Portal.
Winter Academy Registration is now open - Do you want your child to attend school the first three days of Winter Break at a nearby elementary school? You can. You just need to register. How do you register? Through the Parent Portal.
LAUSD Survey for Instructional Calendars - Do you want a say in there being a full week off from school at Thanksgiving; or three weeks for Winter Break; or when the school year begins and ends? The district is asking for opinions from stakeholders for the next three years of calendars. How do you give your opinion? Through the Parent Portal. Due date is October 25!
If you need help registering (40 families to go) or with completing any of the above items please come and see us and know that we are here to help.
Please enjoy the rest of your weekend.
See you Monday!
Mr. Lamb

SEEDS Update:
We are still waiting for the contractor to begin the concrete work for our stage area and the irrigation for the native plant zone.
Soil was delivered on Wednesday for the large grass area, and we are awaiting updates on the next step timeline for grass and trees. We have been told that trees will be planted last so that the grass has time to grow and get locked in. This will allow the trees to thrive after planting!

Birthday Policy
Families,
We want to remind you of our birthday party policy. In an effort to be equitable and keep our students healthy, we do NOT allow caregivers to send in cupcakes and treats for birthdays. While classes may organize celebrations for various occasions throughout the year, birthday parties should be held outside of school. Parents are welcome to arrange with the teacher to read a story in their child's class, or lead a fun birthday activity. Additionally, parents are welcome to donate something special to the class in honor of their child. We understand that birthdays are special , and every student and staff member will be recognized with a birthday song at our monthly assemblies.
