PRINCIPAL'S NOTE
Hello Summit View Families & Partners!
With December upon us, the spirit of joy and celebration fills the halls of our great school. As we embrace the season and the closing of another remarkable calendar year, we are excited to share the exciting happenings and upcoming events at our school:
5th Grade Band In-formance, December 6, 6:30p
I remember listening to our 5th grade students last year during the dress rehearsal of this performance thinking, “No way!” The efforts that our students put in within the first three months of school is on display during this beautiful performance directed by Mrs. Wehmeier!
Book Fair & Holiday Shop, December 7 and 8
The Book Fair and Holiday Shop are long-standing fundraising traditions at Summit View that fill the building with excitement. Students will preview both the Book Fair and Holiday Shop first and may bring money for purchases on Thursday, December 7 and Friday, December 8.
Annual Silent Auction, Goes LIVE Online December 8 & Closes Sunday, December 10.
The link to the Silent Auction will be shared with all families the morning of Friday, December 8. Please visit to see all the wonderful experiences offered and consider sharing it within your circles.
Third Annual Folk Fair!, December 9, 9am-11am
Summit View will be buzzing with festive activities throughout the morning of Saturday, December 9. From crafting holiday decorations to learning about diverse cultural traditions, students & their families will engage in enriching experiences that celebrate the spirit of unity and diversity. Also available at the Folk Fair will be live performances, silent auction, and a Bake Sale.
Winter Break
Please note that we do have school through Friday, December 22. We return from Winter Break on January 2nd. We hope this break offers families quality time together, filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories.
December is an excellent time to reflect on the year gone by and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives. We encourage families to engage in discussions with their children about gratitude and kindness, fostering a spirit of appreciation and empathy.
As winter weather sets in, please ensure your children are dressed appropriately for the colder temperatures. Remind them about the importance of staying warm and safe during outdoor activities.
We are immensely grateful for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Your partnership contributes to the success and happiness of our students.
If you have any questions or need further information about any of the mentioned events, please reach out to our school office. Wishing you all a joyful holiday season filled with love, laughter, and togetherness!
Thank you for your continued partnership,
Mr. Sheskey, Principal
VISION SCREENING
Vision Screening Coming to Your Child’s School
Volunteers from the Waukesha Lion’s Club will be coming to your child’s school to
screen students in 4K, K, 1st, 3rd and 5th grades. There will be at least one screener who has been certified by our KidSight USA and all screeners are Lions Club members. They will be using equipment called Plus Optix that is able to detect possible problems within the eye. Screening takes less than 1 minute per child and is done by having the child look into a device that resembles a camera from a few feet away. Most children report that it is much like having their picture taken.
**Vision Screening at Summit View is Tuesday, December 12th**
You will receive information about your child’s results, in the event your child is referred for additional testing. If you would like to opt out, because your child has had recent screening and/or has an established eye doctor, please contact Ms. Wilch in the health room, to indicate you’re choosing to “opt out” of Vision Screening. Email: bwilch@waukesha.k12.wi.us or
Call: (262) 970-2615.

PLEASE work with your child to make sure they are able to dress on their own and manage their outerwear independently. ** If your child wears boots to school, they need to have a pair of shoes to put on when they get to school.
IPADS are needed at school every day. Please charge them and send them daily.
Reading:
The theme of Unit 3 is Relationships - Students will
explore the relationships between characters in fiction texts.
Our focus will be on learning to talk about characters, settings, and important events in a story while listening to each other, and adding our ideas to the discussion.
Phonics:
Students in first grade will continue to work on applying new learning in their phonics lessons to reading. Unit 3 will focus on r blends, s blends and final consonant blends.
Writing:
Students will write narratives this month. Students will be writing their own stories based on the characters they love.
Unit 3 Monolingual Parent Letter
Math
In math, students will use the number 10 as a benchmark number. They will apply the strategy of decomposing a single digit number to get to 10 when subtracting a teen number. Students will be able to articulate mental math strategies to subtract based on their familiar addition strategies. Students will review doubles facts up to 20. They will extend their understanding of doubles facts to add plus 1 or subtract minus 1. Ex. 6+6=12. 6+7=13, 6+5=11.
Keep an eye out for the purple parent letters that come home often to explain the new learning and practice your student will engage in.
Science/Social Studies
This month we will be completing our unit “The Earth’s Place in the Universe” in science. Students will complete a final project about seasons to demonstrate their learning.

Literacy News
Unit 3 is underway!
The essential question for this unit is: What influences relationships?
In class we will look at how relationships impact characters. We will continue to learn about themes and points of view.
In writing, students will learn about memoirs. Students will have fun as they bring in pictures and items that elicit memories from their own past and write a short memoir of their own.
Unit 3: Parent Literacy Letter
Math News:
We are continuing our work in i-Ready Unit 2: Decimals and Fractions: Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction. At this point in the unit, all students should be comfortable comparing, rounding, adding, and subtracting decimals. Please continue to look for quizzes and tests to come home, be signed by a guardian, and returned to school. You can also check your child’s progress by logging into Infinite Campus to check their grades. It would be great to make this a weekly routine with your child!
Social Studies & Science News:
Students are finishing learning about early European explorers and settlers in North America. Upon completion of this learning, we will shift back to Science and begin exploring matter and its interactions. Students will learn about properties of matter, what matter is, and how it is conserved. Students will also investigate physical and chemical changes of matter.
