At CEPS, students learn to read so that they can "read to learn" as they get older. Early literacy will always be one of our focus areas, and this year, many of our staff are participating in intensive learning and training with the goal of continually improving our literacy outcomes for all students. In addition to the time spent learning our new comprehensive literacy curriculum, Wonders 2023, over 30 of our teaching staff are participating in something called LETRS training, which is all about the science of how young students learn to read. This morning, we participated in a session on how to break apart syllables and identify how vowels are part of words....did you know there are over six different patterns of syllable types that depend on how the vowel sound(s) presents in each syllable? From closed and open vowels, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and more...our teachers really dove into that learning today. Next up...transferring that learning into our teaching in a way that our students can grasp onto. Here's a fun tip to help you break words into syllables, either put your hand under your chin as you say the word - each time you feel your chin move your hand down, that equals one syllable; or hum the word - each "hum" you make identifies a syllable. Thanks to our staff for their focus on student achievement in ALL areas, especially with literacy on the brain today!

Almost, Maine: a play to raise money for the McFarland Food Pantry!
Michael Brown (1st grade teacher at CEPS) is acting in this sweet, funny, lovely play that will benefit our local food pantry! Brooke Hauser (CEPS Assoc. Principal) is acting in it and directing several of the scenes, too! This would make a fantastic date night, girls night out, group event... any of the above. Tickets are $20 and the seating is general admission, so folks who'd like to sit together can do so, regardless of when you buy your tickets. Chat with a friend or two and come check out this terrific benefit show! Use the poster QR codes here or click to buy tickets at bit.ly/almostmcfarland! *This community event is for ages 13+
