HITEON HIGHLIGHTS NEWSLETTER
APRIL 2021
Principal's Message
Greetings Hiteon Families,
The first week with the new CDL and Hybrid schedules has gone smoothly. Thank you to all our staff and families for making the needed changes to support our students in their education, whether continuing remote learning or coming to in-person learning. We are looking forward to a productive spring together learning.
A big Hiteon Heart thank you to our amazing PTC for all their work and support on the virtual Science Fair and the Science Assembly "Radical Reactions." It was a great program, very interactive. It was wonderful to hear and see all the students' observations and questions. Hiteon is fortunate to have a strong parent community that exemplifies the Hiteon Heart 💙!
Best,
Meghan Warren, Principal
Jenny Read-Emslie, Assistant Principal

Hybrid Arrival/Dismissal Updates
Arrival:
Arrival begins at 7:45 (no supervision for students until 7:45)
Families that are driving or walking students to the school, please know that adults are not allowed into the building at this time. If you are driving your student, we ask that you stay in your car and drive through one of the drop off zones. Please do not park and walk your students to their doors. We need to keep the number of people congregating at the entrances to only students to ensure the health and safety of all.
The arrival time is at 7:45 am. If you arrive before that, we will ask that your child(ren) stay in the car until 7:45. We will not have any supervision for children before that time, and it is not safe for them to be left unattended.
Dismissal:
Dismissal begins at 10:15.
If you are picking up your child(ren) by car, you MUST stay in your car. Please do not park in the front parking lot and walk to get them. Students MUST get into their car on the curb side (passenger side) only. It is a safety hazard to have students walk around to the driver's side.
Each family was sent a packet with a nameplate to place in your car window to help us learn your car and student(s). Please display it in your passenger side window to help us locate your student(s) faster.

Playground Use
The Hiteon playground will be closed during in-person instruction time. The playground is closed from 7:30 am - 10:45 am daily during the remainder of the school year. To adhere to the strict social distancing guidelines, it is required that all families leave the school grounds at dismissal time and not congregate on the playground. Thank you for your cooperation.

A letter from the District
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Here in the Beaverton School District, we teach children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. In order to help our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn, we also provide age-appropriate health instruction. There will be two primary resources used for this instruction: The Great Body Shop to teach the adopted Oregon Health Standards and fightchildabuse.org to teach sexual abuse prevention in accordance with Erin’s Law. Continue reading for more information on each resource.
Oregon Health Education Standards
The Great Body Shop, published by The Children’s Health Market, will be used to teach the Oregon Health Education Standards. It offers skills-based instruction that addresses physical, social, emotional, and mental health. Human Sexuality Education instruction is age appropriate, medically accurate, and relevant for all students.
Erin’s Law (Sexual Abuse Prevention)
An important component of our curriculum is to help children protect their bodies, get support when abuse has occurred, and report to a trusted adult. In accordance with Erin’s Law, we are educating children about sexual abuse and promoting awareness within our communities. The Oregon Department of Education has required all Oregon schools to comply with Erin’s Law. The Erin’s Law lessons address personal safety, touching safety, and assertiveness.
Previewing Materials/Opting Out
The process for previewing materials and opting out of instruction will be slightly different due to the pandemic. Your child’s teacher will be sending communication home prior to instruction in human sexuality and sexual abuse prevention to address this.
Thank you for helping us to make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.
Sincerely,
Administrator

Safe Routes to School
Kids are everywhere. Drive like it.
As students return to schools for in-person learning this month, arrival and departure times may be different than you are used to. While traffic and activities around Beaverton schools may look different, one thing is for sure – kids are out and about in our community. Some kids may be returning to school buildings while others will be continuing to learn remotely and taking breaks outside during the day. Safety is everyone’s responsibility! Kids are everywhere. #DriveLikeIt.
Driving Safety Tips
Our community needs everyone to drive safely, be alert, and follow traffic laws, especially when observing students walking, biking, skateboarding, and scootering. Let’s work together to keep our students safe!
- Stop for school busses when red lights flash. Both directions of traffic must stop.
- Watch your speed. 20 mph is the school zone speed limit.
- Be ready to stop at all times. Kids may dart into the street without checking for traffic.
- Stop for people at intersections and when asked by the crossing guard. Check your blind spots before turning and behind your vehicle before reversing.
- Drive for conditions – This time of year is often rainy and foggy limiting visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians so keep those headlights on to help others see you.
