Dear Parents
Thank you to the many parents who attended our Beach Carnival last Friday. The weather was perfect and thanks to the excellent organisation by Ms Briggs and Mr Ferrara the event ran smoothly and was enjoyed by students, staff and parents. Congratulations to all students who participated and well done to our champions. Days such as this are often a challenge to students as they attempt new or different activities and speaks highly of their character through enthusiastic participation and support for class mates.
At the recent School Board meeting the Board endorsed the school’s Good Standing Policy. It is a requirement of all schools to have a Good Standing Policy and ours focuses on attendance, behaviour and uniform. The policy will not affect the majority of our student who already do “the right thing” every day but could restrict access to visitors, Reward days, camps and extra excursions for those who do not adhere to the policy. All students in secondary are aware of the policy and it will be carefully explained and discussed with all Year 3-12 students. A copy is included with this newsletter and I am happy to discuss any aspect of the policy with parents.
Last week we also had a cyber-safety talk presented by an expert for all Year 3-12 students focusing on the safe use of all media. At school we have chosen to block most social media as there is very little requirement to have access in most learning areas. We encourage all parents to be aware of their children’s use of technology to ensure appropriate and safe use at all times. With each newsletter we will include some cyber information to assist parents.
The Dental Van is now at school and over the next few weeks all students will have check-ups. I am old enough to remember the introduction of the School Dental Service and it genuinely has been one of the best government initiatives to support dental health.
As always if you have any queries regarding your child’s education please do not hesitate to contact the class teacher to arrange a suitable time to meet.

Principal
Good Standing Policy
Dear Parents
It has been a fantastic start to the school year for the high school at Jurien. Several new initiatives to better engage our students are well underway and already yielding positive outcomes.
Mr Auzins has commenced teaching a new General Course for Senior Secondary students – Marine and Maritime Studies. This course is focussed on oceanography concepts, exploring the marine environment and the sustainable management of Western Australian fisheries. This course has proven popular with our students and allows us to take advantage of our amazing local environment as a teaching resource.
The Aquaculture program is being re-vitalised by Miss Watterson as an option for our Year 9 and Year 10 students. The students who have selected this option have been busy exploring ways to expand the breeding program and undertake scientific investigations into ways to improve the aquaculture management.
Another popular new option for Year 9 and Year 10 students has been Photography, taught by Miss Noble. With the investment in some new HD cameras and some assistance from specialist visitors I am looking forward to seeing the results of our students work shortly.
Mr Ferrara has started Specialised Physical Education. The students are studying Basketball this semester and will be focussed on advanced strategies, skills and tactics, as well as coaching and umpiring. This option for Year 9 and 10 students is in addition to normally scheduled Physical Education lessons.
Finally, Miss Vandayar has initiated a Workplace Learning Program and our first students commenced in work experience placements this week. We are very thankful for the support from our local community in providing opportunities for our students to learn on the job, in the ‘real world’. We are sure this will be a large success and hope to develop it further in the future.
I thank everyone for the great start to the year and I look forward to seeing the amazing work that our students and staff do, come to fruition.

Secondary Deputy
