NEWSLETTER 11 DECEMBER 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
TΔnei te tΕ« mihi mahana ki a koutou
It is hard to believe we are nearly at the end of the school year for 2024. As we approach the end of the year, it's a time to reflect on the growth, achievements, and memories we've created together. This season brings a mix of emotionsβexcitement for the future, gratitude for the journey and joy in the progress we've made. Our students have been a constant source of inspiration, bringing laughter, creativity, and energy to every part of our school. As we look ahead, may we carry with us the blessings of the year, cherishing the moments that have made it so special.
Prize Giving 2024
This is an invitation and reminder of our Senior Prize Giving on Monday 16th December at 9.30am and Junior Prize Giving at 12.00pm in our BAMJC. This is a celebration of achievement and effort of all our students during the year. The Year 6 students will also share their dance during the Senior Prize Giving.
Graduation Mass 2024
Next Tuesday 17th November we will celebrate our End of Year and Graduation Mass at 9.30am at St Mary Immaculate Church. Our Year 2-6 students will travel by bus to the Church, leaving school around 9.00am and returning by morning tea. This is a wonderful celebration of the Eucharist and acknowledging our Year 6 leavers who we have nurtured during their time at St Maryβs. We wish them well as they continue their educational journey in their next schools. Please note there will be reserved seating at the Church for students in their classes with seating behind for parents and whΔnau.
Principal and Deputy Principal for the Day
Angel and Charli were the lucky winners of the Colour Fun Run Fundraiser and enjoyed their day as Principal (Angel) and Deputy Principal (Charli). They shadowed Lisa Broadmore and I for the day and also wrote an addition for this weekβs newsletter (see below). Well done girls, I can highly recommend you for these positions in future years!
Being principal for a day is the best thing you could ever imagine, even though it can be hard sometimes. When you get the opportunity to be principal of the day it sounds like it is going to be the best thing ever, and it is, but you always have to do work as well, like checking to see if everything is okay, going to meetings, and many other things. At morning tea time, my Deputy Principal friend Charli and I went to the staffroom to have something to eat. I had some fruit, some chocolate cake and a cup of tea. While we were there we said a speech for Rachel Parry since she was leaving to go to Christchurch to live. After our speech Rachel said she was sad that she was going and wondered if she should really leave us! Being principal of the day was a lot of work but in the end it was also fun. At lunchtime, we got sushi and juice. After we ate, I went with Mrs Warnock to room one and we supervised the children while they ate their food. It was an incredible experience to learn what itβs like to be a real principal! - Principal Angel
Being deputy principal for a day is really fun but hard at the same time. When I walked through the classrooms to check that the kids were doing their work, they all had such huge smiles on their faces. It made me feel special and warm inside. They were all so kind. After that we marked room fours handwriting with stickers. They all were so neat and made me jealous. They were so well behaved, it was great! At morning tea we went to eat in the staff room, and since Rachel Parry was leaving the next day there were cakes and so many yum fruits like watermelon, cherries and more yum desserts. I also had some lemon and lime green tea. Once morning tea finished we had Mass practice and I got to sit in front of everyone. When I saw my friends in the crowd I giggled because it was so awkward. Just before lunch we went to buy sushi and got teriyaki chicken on rice which was delicious, as well as a drink. We got Keri Apple and Blackcurrant juice, since it was a hot day. It was so refreshing! Once we finished I went to room three to supervise the kids when they were eating. This was a great experience and hard work. We also gave away mini certificates to kids who were good, kind, nice, patient and thoughtful. There were so many good kids! - Deputy Principal Charli
Peaceful Parkers
During Term 4 Sean Anderson, the Travel Safe Co-ordinator for Young People, from Tauranga City Council has been working with a group of senior students to reinforce road safety and parking around our school. Our group of Travel Safe students have worked on a project called Peaceful Parker and they have created the following resources to reinforce their important message:
They will share their project again at the beginning of next year to pinpoint and guide the best parking places around the school. View video here!
It is reassuring to hear the positive feedback from Tauranga Council that there has been an improvement in the parking outside the school. As always we need to reinforce good parking behaviour for the safety of our students.
Sports Coordinator
Congratulations to Michelle Green who has been appointed as our new Sports Coordinator. We appreciate the valuable work that Michelle has done at our school as a Teacher Aide and are excited to welcome her into this new role. Michelle will be in contact before the end of the term and early in Term 1 with details of sports registrations.

Last week the focus of our Liturgy was the Advent Wreath and lighting our first candle of Hope. Students from WhΔnau Meehan, along with our Liturgical Leaders, helped set up our new prayer focus, changing our cloth from green to purple, the colour of Advent. They explained the meaning of the Advent wreath - it is a circle with no beginning and no end. The shape of the wreath reminds us of Godβs unending love for us and the greenery reminds us of the new life that Jesus brings us.
The first purple candle we lit last week was the candle of Hope. This week we lit the second purple candle, the candle of Faith. We remember the long journey that Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem. We prepare for our own journey, making ourselves ready for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. The rose candle is lit in the third week of Advent. The rose candle reminds us of the joy and excitement we feel as we move closer to Christmas and the celebration of Jesusβ birth. The final purple candle is the candle of Peace. Jesusβ words to his friends were βPeace I leave you, my peace I give you.β
The white candle is a sign that Jesusβ light has come into our world.
We light this on Christmas Day.
Here is a prayer to say with our families:
Creator God, wake us up! Stir our hearts and hands into action and activity. Show us the way to be a light to all in need. Encourage and empower us to live and be Godβs Dream of hope, peace, joy and love.
Farewell Liturgy for Rachel Parry
Yesterday we had a special liturgy to recognise, celebrate and say thank you to a valued member of our staff, Rachel Parry. Rachel has been with us at St Maryβs school for β¦.. years and has been an integral part of our St Maryβs staff as our Sports Coordinator, Teacher Aide and International Tutor. Mrs Warnock talked about Rachelβs many gifts and talents and thanked her for sharing them with us at St Maryβs school, we have been very blessed to have had Rachel as part of our St Maryβs family. Rachel will be leaving us this week and making a move to Christchurch with her family.
βLord, we pray for Mrs Parryβs family, for her husband Kelvin and their daughters Grace, Mackenzie, Carys and son Fergus. May the Holy Spirit guide, inspire and protect them always. Amen.
Reverse Advent Calendar
Thank you for your kind donations for our Reverse Advent Calendar. We will continue to bring in pantry items/toiletries and treats and place them underneath our Christmas tree in the foyer. These items are then collected and donated to Saint Vincent de Paul for their Food Bank. We thank you for your kindness and generosity at this time.
Spreading Christmas Joy
Our young Vinnies have been very busy thinking of others at this time. They have been on a mission to make Christmas cards to spread a little Christmas cheer for our housebound parishioners. We thank our Young Vinnies and Mrs Kenny for all their service this year. They have been shining examples of how we can work together to live our school Vision.
βTogether with Jesus we love, learn and serve in the Cluny Spirit.β
