October
Evergreen Events
Principally Speaking
Dear Families,
As we embrace the vibrant colors and crisp air of October, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our students, parents, and staff for a fantastic start to the school year. Our classrooms are buzzing with excitement as students dive into new learning adventures and build meaningful connections.
On Monday teachers worked hard examining student data for reading and math to make plans for WIN times. During these 30-minute daily periods children get WIN or "What I Need". This time in our day for differentiated instruction allows us to deliver interventions, re-teaching sessions, or enrichment experiences based upon individual student needs.
This month we have several exciting events planned, including our Fall Fundraiser, our annual Walk, Bike, or Roll to School Day, 4th grade field trip to the Little Red Schoolhouse, You Matter Day, Trunk-or-Treat, Picture Re-Takes, and Parent-Teacher Conferences. Your continued support and involvement are invaluable to us, and together, we can ensure every child thrives in a nurturing and stimulating environment. Let's make this October a month of growth, joy, and community spirit!
Warm regards,
Mr. Koepke
Principal, Evergreen Elementary
Zones of Regulation
A newer concept that we are teaching to students in the DC Everest School District is the Zones of Regulation. It is a system that helps sort feelings into colors and energy levels. The four colors are blue (low energy feelings), green (controlled energy and feelings), yellow (higher energy and feelings), and red (extremely high energy and very strong feelings). The purpose is to help kids recognize their emotions and the energy their body is feeling as a result of that emotion.
We teach students that all zones are OK, but most activities work best when we are in a certain zone. For example, we want our body in the blue zone (low energy) when we are trying to fall asleep at night, and the green zone (focused energy) when we are learning throughout most of the day. Yellow (higher energy) might be a good zone for a performance or when we are competing at a sport, and red(high energy) happens when we are caught off guard- like terrified or surprised by something.
Sometimes our feelings may cause our energy to be in a zone that doesn't fit the situation, and then we need to find a way to calm our body so it can better match the situation. We call this regulating our body. Finding ways to be calm often helps us be more in control of our actions.
Below are some tools and strategies that you can use at home to reinforce these concepts. Please reach out to Ms. Meyer if you have questions or would like additional ideas to practice at home.

Social Studies
Mrs. Wodalski
Kindergarten Teacher and English Language Arts and Social Studies Leader
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of Social Studies is: a part of a school or college curriculum concerned with the study of social relationships and the functioning of society and usually made up of courses in history, government, economics, civics, sociology, geography, and anthropology.
In all grades, we begin the year by learning our classroom rules and how we will work together during the school day. We discuss how we will solve problems and make collective decisions. Kindergarten learns about community and citizenship during this time as well. First grade is learning about culture and family traditions. Our fourth graders are learning about school in the past in preparation for their Little Red School House field trip. Some fifth-grade classes are implementing a classroom economy to teach about finance. Other grades may be focusing on science instruction and will have direct social studies time soon.
While we have dedicated Social Studies time built into our schedule, social studies concepts are also imbedded throughout our day. Our English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum, Wit and Wisdom, is a knowledge building reading and writing curriculum. That means, our students are taught to analyze text and write about what they have learned, while also learning valuable background knowledge. Many topics covered fall into the social studies category, such as America: Then and Now, Civil Rights Heroes, the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and the 7 Continents.
If you are curious what social studies topics will be covered in your child’s class, please reach out their teacher for more information.
PTO October Update: Exciting Events Ahead!
Hello Evergreen Families!
First, a huge THANK YOU to Sam’s Pizza and everyone who came out for our first Dine Out Night of the year! We raised an incredible $725! While there’s no Dine Out Night in October, mark your calendars for our next one on Saturday, November 16th at Cedar Creek Grill House. We can't wait to see you there!
Next up, our Fall Fundraiser kicked off on October 1st! Your student should have brought home a Cherrydale packet filled with everything you need to know about selling items online or using paper forms. This fundraiser is one of our two main fundraisers that supports all the amazing PTO activities, from field trips to our beloved book vending machine. Our goal is to raise $25,000, and we’d love your support to help us reach it! Mark your calendars for November 12th for Fundraiser Item Pickup — more details will be shared soon!
Join us for our annual Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 9th! This is a fun opportunity for all students to stroll down the path to school and enjoy a tasty snack provided by the PTO along the way. Parents and buses will drop students off at Towering Pines Park, so let’s make this a fun and active start to the day!
To wrap up October with a bang, we’re thrilled to announce our Trunk-or-Treat Event on Sunday, October 27th, from 4-6 PM in the Evergreen parking lot! Our enthusiastic volunteer planning committee is hard at work preparing for a spooktacular evening filled with fun and excitement. We’re calling on all Evergreen students, families, and local organizations to help make this event a success! We need volunteers to create creative trunks, provide engaging activities, and hand out delicious treats for our community to enjoy. If you’d like to decorate a trunk, please sign up here: bit.ly/EvergreenElemTorT. Plus, keep an eye out for our Candy Drive coming soon! We want to ensure our trunks are brimming with treats for all the little ghouls and goblins. Watch for more information to come home with your student(s)!
We can’t wait to see you at all these exciting events!
Dropping Kids Off
Please do not drop children off at the intersection of Pine and Tower. Using the 4-way stop as a drop off point for school is not allowed. Those interested in walking the trail to school each day should use the parking lot at Tower Park. Thank you.
