School picture photo packages have arrived, and will be distributed on Monday, October 7th in Synergy. Retakes of any pre-purchased photos will take place on October 22nd.

Counseling Corner
Parents of 8th graders:
High School Transition activities are starting up. This week Mrs. Clark went into ELA classes to talk all about high school. She went over everything from what is a credit to dual enrollment to the hope scholarship. This presentation (High School 101) is linked on the 8th to 9th grade transition website linked here. Please see the following list for Pathway Information Nights at each Forsyth County High School. These programs are open to families across the district to come learn about various pathways in case they want to submit an out of district request. Check each high school’s website and social media for specific details as the event nears.
The applications for the Forsyth Central Academies: STEM, Film, and Humanities, open on October 15th and close on November 15th. The online applications are available on Forsyth Central High School’s website under Academies. The Out of District Application for Forsyth County Schools opens on October 14th and closes on November 29th. Click here for the link. The application for Alliance Academy for Innovation is the Out of District Application and it will be open from October 14th to November 29th. Make sure to stay up to date by checking the high school websites and the Otwell Middle School Counseling webpage under “8th to 9th grade transition”. OMS Athletics
6th Grade Information
Science: We hope everyone is taking the time to go outside each night and look for the moon to see what phase it is. Such a great opportunity to talk with your students about what we are studying in class. We have finished up with moon phases and eclipses and are moving into tides followed by seasons.
Math: The Unit 2B Test (over decimals) is Tuesday. Then we will start Unit 3, ratios!
Advanced Math: We will be continuing with our short decimal’s unit. We will have our test tentatively on Oct 24. Please check agendas and Canvas for updates.
Accelerated Math: We should be finishing our decimals unit this week. Next week we will begin our unit over ratios, rates, and proportions. We will begin with an introduction to ratios, then begin creating equivalent ratios to introduce proportions. If we have enough time, we will also begin rates and unit rate.
ELA: We are beginning our nonfiction unit on success. We will learn how to use the Common Lit learning platform as we explore various recipes for success while learning about main idea, text structure, and the importance of annotation. Students will also take a Membean quiz personalized to the vocabulary words they have been studying. Please continue to encourage your child to complete Membean. Also, 10/18 is an online learning day and your child will have an ELA assignment to complete. Remind your child to check their teacher's CANVAS page.
Advanced ELA: Advanced ELA students will continue exploring the ingredients to the recipe for success. We will review different informational text structures and analyze how information can be organized to enhance clarity. Students will apply their understanding of text structures to articles we read in class.
Social Studies: In Social Studies, we have been working on our European geography which includes the countries and physical features. We will start talking about the climate, population, and natural resources of Europe. Check canvas for all quiz and test dates.
Advanced Social Studies: Students will be reviewing European geography, government, and economics through a choice board project. The test on this unit will be on 10/29.
6th Enrichment: This week we have learned more about specific executive functioning skills & how they can help us throughout our lives. We explored word gradients, where we ranked similar words on a line, according to their intensity. Students are doing great with independent reading!
7th Grade Information
Science with Mrs. Joseph, Mrs. Pennington, & Mrs. Roth
Students will continue a unit on cell processes including cell transport, mitosis, cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
Math with Mrs. Coley, Mrs. Kittrell, Mrs. Moore, & Mrs. Smallwood
Math classes will be reviewing all Expression standards to prepare for the summative. Students will have a study guide to practice all skills that will be covered and can find additional review on their class Canvas page. Please be sure your students are logging in and completing classes work on Friday (10/18) for our first Online Learning Day.
Advanced Math with Mr. Bruce
Next week we will be continuing our ratios and proportions unit. We will be solving proportions, determining the constant of proportionality from ratios, tables, and equations, and solving word problems using proportions.
Accelerated Math with Ms. Moore
We have completed our Geometry unit and will be learning about Probability next. This is a short unit, and it will go quickly. Next, we will begin learning the 8th grade standards.
Social Studies with Ms. Foley, Mrs. Perkins, & Mrs. Jaeger
Next week we will be working on identifying the governments of the Middle East. Our next summative, the Unit 3 Governments Test, will be on Tuesday, October 22nd. Please be sure to monitor Canvas for important resources as well as formative and summative updates.
ELA with Mrs.Lazaro, Mrs. Jaeger, Mrs. Wolff, & Mrs. Sturtevant
Students are continuing with Unit 2: Communication and have just wrapped up almost all of the grammar lessons associated (appositives/prepositions/independent and dependent clauses). We are preparing for a quiz on these concepts on 10/16. Please remind your child to be reading their independent novel at home as we move forward with our independent novel project.
8th Grade Information
Advance Physical Science:
We will be comparing ionic and covalent bonding this week.
ELA:
Next week students will continue to practice reading strategies for informational pieces. We will also continue to practice our 8th grade grammar concepts.
Advanced ELA:
Next week we will explore new methods of information distribution, and we'll begin brainstorming our own informational writing. We will also continue with our 8th grade grammar concepts.
On Level Math:
On-level math will be reviewing literal equations and turning standard form equations into slope-intercept equations and graphing. The Unit 3 Test is Tuesday, October 15th. We will also begin with linear and nonlinear functions.
Accelerated Math:
Accel math will be learning about domain and range of functions and characteristics of functions.
Advanced Math:
This week the Advance students will be learning Systems of Equations. Systems of equations is learning how to find solutions for two linear lines. They will be using the concepts they learned in Unit 1 linear lines and working on analyzing linear equations with real world problems by using the Elimination Method. The Systems of Equations test will be Oct. 25, 2024.
Georgia Studies:
The class will be completing their project on the American Revolutionary War and turning them in at the beginning of class on Tuesday. We will also be reviewing for the Unit 4 test over the American Revolutionary War. The test will be on Wednesday. On Thursday, we will start our next unit which is over Government Foundations. Friday, for Online Learning day, the students will be completing a Nearpod on the Articles of Confederation.
Advanced Georgia Studies:
Students will continue working on their one pager project due at the start of class on Tuesday. Students will take the Unit 4 Revolutionary War test on Wednesday. Thursday is Dawg Day and Friday is online learning. Students will complete a Nearpod on the Articles of Confederation and Constitution.
English Acquisition:
Next week in English Acquisition Class we will be studying the verbs used for talking about our 5 senses: I see a rainbow, I smell the flowers, etc. Also, we will practice reading, writing, and speaking about our school schedule. We will continue to talk about Spanish Heritage month, our likes and dislikes, and learn how to use personal pronouns and object pronouns.
