A Note from Mrs. Orr regarding Safety Week
Happy Friday families! We have made it through an entire week. Although hot, we did practice getting back in the swing of school routines.
This week all students practiced expectations in the hallways, at recess and lunch. Each teacher has been practicing routines in their room centered around transitioning from one spot to another, how to get appropriate attention, and building relationships with all staff and students. Staff have been mondeling how to be respectful and polite so that students will understand and see the Sarah Milner way of doing business. “Leader in Me” was kicked off in each room with lessons around proactive language, thinking about ownership in behavior and always remembering the end in mind. Classrooms have been busy creating classroom agreements so classmates know how to treat each other during the day. I am proud of all the hard work. Students and staff give each day their best!
As more routines are established and reinforced, we will send home information to families so you can help reinforce those expectations and talk about them at home.
We wanted to provide you with some additional information about next week’s schedule. Starting Monday, we are having what we refer to as “Safety Week.” Thompson School District uses what’s known as Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to provide clarity and communication in the event of an emergency. Throughout the week of August 26-30, we will practice multiple drills (typically one a day). Students will be reminded of the specific drill with their classroom teacher in the morning and then later hear the SRP directions over the PA system.
Knowing some students may be nervous or uncomfortable when practicing in the event of an emergency, we simply wanted to provide you with reassurance that we practice these drills so that in the event of a real emergency, we are best prepared to keep everyone safe.
This week’s drills will include a “Secure” where we practice what to do in the event of threat outside and/or nearby within the neighborhood. We will conduct a “Lock Down” to prepare for what to do if there was someone or something dangerous within the school building. One drill is called the “Hold in Place.” We would use this procedure if a student, staff member or guest was having a medical emergency that required everyone hold in place to allow for privacy and/or quick access of medical personnel to the scene. We will practice a “Shelter” drill to know what to do in the event of a weather incident that causes us to take shelter and last but not least, an “Evacuation” drill to know how to safely evacuate the building in the event of a fire or other hazardous situation.
Please visit with your student(s) about these drills and contact the school if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Habit 1: Being Proactive
As we build more understanding around Leader in Me, here is opportunity you have to support Habit 1: Proactiv
We teach the students that they are in charge of their life. They are responsible for their choices and behaviors. They can choose how they react to other people or situations.
STEPS TO TAKING CONTROL OF YOU
1. Pause: Stop what you are doing and pause.
2. Think: Think about what you should or shouldn’t do.
3. Choose: Choose the best thing to do.
Common Language you can use at home and at school:
Proactive
Circle of control
Pause
Free and Reduced Lunch Application
While meals are free for all students this year we are still asking ALL families to fill out an application. Why? The Healthy School Meals for All (HSMA) program is funded in partnership with federal nutrition programs that rely on income information to support meals for all students. Other state and federal grants are awarded based on free and reduced meal eligibility rates.
Additionally, families that qualify may receive discounted or waived fees for programs inside and outside of the school district.
