John F. Kennedy High School
Principal Update - November 18, 2024
From The Principal ...
Dear Cavalier Teachers, Students, Parents and Families,
Students received their report cards last week. For many students, the report cards brought good news, reflecting their hard work and learning from the first marking period. For others, the reports were not so good. I talked to many students who were disappointed in their grades, and that is driving what I am about to share.
I want to encourage all students to focus more on learning, and not on grades. This may sound counterintuitive, but research shows that when students focus on the learning, they actually earn better grades. Students who focus on learning, attend class willingly, complete their assignments to demonstrate what they know, and they enjoy learning. And all of this results in better grades, even though grades were not the focus.
We want students to be more than just their grades. It is important that students understand and want this, as well. We want students to learn and to think. A formal definition of the word “think” reminds us that it means to actively connect and form ideas. When students think and learn, there is no end to what they can do. So somehow, we need to shift students from thinking about a grade–a letter that does not tell us much about them–and to focusing on thinking.
Currently, the grading system is what we use, and I can’t say that it will change any time soon. But knowing that it is not a perfect system does not mean we should not make it work for us. Grades matter. But the way we earn good grades is to want to be educated and to learn.
And after this philosophical discussion of grades, I will close on a technical point about the marking period and the grades that students have on their report cards. The grades from marking period one are connected to and influenced by marking period two, and will factor together to determine the grade that a student gets for the semester. Even if a student failed a class with a grade of E in the first marking period, they can still earn credit for the semester if they earn a passing grade in the second marking period. And the marking period grades do not show on a student’s transcript, only the semester grade.
So make sure to focus on the learning, and let that guide the grade you will earn. It’s for the better.
Thank you all for your support; and remember, we are stronger together.

From the Weekly Message …
Students received hard copies of their report cards last week. All students should have this copy to show their families. Please review your child’s performance and continue to encourage their learning.
Freshmen Parent Check-In
Join us for the Freshmen Parent Check-In, which will take place this Tuesday during the November, general PTSA meeting on November 19 at 6:30 PM in the Media Center and on Zoom. With the first marking period behind us, we want to check in with our new Cavalier families and see how the transition to high school is going, share advice, insights and words of wisdom for those who've gracefully, or ungracefully, made it through the first year of high school. We'll have 9th grade administrator Ms. O'Neil and a student representative to offer their take so parents get real, tangible perspectives.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on November 25th and 26th. Please plan now and make sure you are free to come in for these important conversations with your child’s teachers.
Please see the flyer listed on the Kennedy website and posted in the weekly Smore Newsletter.
We ask that you remind your student to wear their ID everyday (to avoid being charged for a new one). Remember that we are a closed campus, and the IDs help us to ensure that only our students are in the building, especially during lunch.
Athletics
Winter sports have started. It is not too late to join some teams. Register via ParentVue today. If your child rosters a winter team, plan on attending "Meet the Coaches" night on Thursday, November 21 at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria.
Students who participate in Sports do better in school and are more prepared for the challenges life brings. Encourage your student to be a part of a sports' team today.

Departmental News
From the Arts and Technology Department
On Tuesday, November 12th, our Technology department proudly welcomed the executive team from Engineering for Us All (e4usa) to observe our newest course offering, Making for Engineers. Dr. Stacy Klein-Gardner, Executive Director of e4usa, and Andrew Green, Director of Partnerships and Communications, spent the day visiting classrooms to see firsthand how our students are applying engineering concepts in real-time.
Dr. Klein-Gardner and Mr. Green had the opportunity to observe classes led by Ms. Valle, Ms. Pontoo, and Mr. Argyros. Students were enthusiastically out of their seats, working together on team projects and tackling challenges such as designing wind shelters, constructing rain shelters, and implementing innovative engineering solutions from scratch. The interactive lessons showcased our students’ dedication to problem-solving and hands-on learning as they tested their creations and adjusted their designs based on performance.
We are incredibly proud of our students’ creative thinking and teamwork, which impressed both our visitors and our staff. The visit highlighted the value of our Making for Engineers course in preparing students to think like engineers and tackle real-world problems. Thank you to e4usa for your support in encouraging our students’ growth and passion for engineering!
MYP
ThinkBig Experience!
Students participating in the ThinkBig! partnership with MCPS Fine Arts, Strathmore, and Glenstone attended their first experience this week at Strathmore. Two performing artists shared their journey through the creative process including goal setting, finding inspiration, keeping motivation, reactions to setbacks, measuring their success, and believing in oneself. The two artists were Taisha Estrada, a singer-songwriter and Josanne Francis, a steelpan performer-composer. Our students worked with their peers from Seneca Valley High School to draft vision boards and create effective criteria for success in their Personal Projects. Thank you to Ms. Beckett, Ms. Campo-Abdoun, Mr. Hensely, Mr. MacDonald, Ms. Prati, and Mr. Wheeler for helping to lead this trip. The second experience will be December 6th back at Strathmore.
10th grade students working on their MYP/IB Personal Project had their first mentor meeting this week. They shared their project goals and received initial feedback from mentors. Make up meetings are being scheduled this week. Shout out to our amazing staff mentors! Our next Personal Project Workshop will be held Monday, November 25th (1/2 day) Periods 2-6 in the Media Center with Ms. Radebe. Please reach out to erin_m_radebe@mcpsmd.org for any questions.
Regional IB
This week, 10th grade students in our Regional IB program visited Planet Word in DC, a voice activated museum. They investigated how language has the power to impact our knowledge of the world through the exhibits "words that matter" and "influential words." They explored the relationship between language and creative expressions including annotated karaoke, interactive painting with words, and the magical library. Finally, they analyzed how words have evolved over space and time in our museum WordShop, 22ft word wall, and voices around the world. Thank you to Mr. Jefferson, Ms. Summerlin, and Ms. Walz for adding their linguistic expertise to make this trip a fun learning experience. To learn more about Planet Word (free tickets available on weekends!), visit their website.
Teacher & Staff Appreciation Notes: Tuesday, November 19th-Friday through November 22nd at Lunch

The tables will be located in the 1200 hallway in front of the bus loop doors from Tuesday, November 19th-Friday through November 22nd. There will be card stations available which will include the options to write a thank you note or sign a selection of pre-made cards. We'll also have markers, crayons, and colored pencils available. The notes will be delivered to the teachers & staff members the week of Thanksgiving. This event is sponsored by the 9th Grade Regional IB students.
NJROTC and Marching Band
This past Saturday, the Kennedy Marching Band, along with our talented drumline, performed in the Silver Spring Thanksgiving Parade. And right along with this impressive group, the NJROTC stood proud and sharp in their crisp uniforms. Many thanks to both of these groups for making Kennedy the place to be!
