TIPS FOR REFERENCE LETTERS
- Always ASK for permission to use someone as a reference first.
- Never assume or put down someone’s name without checking first.
Think carefully about who you are asking:
- Have they known you for a long time?
- Are they someone who you have interacted with positively? Can they speak highly of you?
- If your scholarship is in a certain subject area, can you ask someone who has known you in that class/subject/environment?
- DOES your SCHOLARSHIP REQUIRE SOMEONE in a SPECIFIC ROLE?
- You should always allow at least 2 WEEKS for your reference to write you a strong reference letter.
- MAKE IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR YOUR REFERENCE!
- Provide your reference with as many details as possible about your academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, leadership, and volunteer opportunities.
Fill out the NorKam Student Profile directly below and share it with your referee.
- Read the instructions carefully on each scholarship application!!!
- Is there a length requirement?
- Specified format? (i.e. double-spaced with a digital signature.)
- *If there is specific criteria – LET YOUR REFEREE know!* (It is not your referee’s job to look up your scholarship criteria.) What does the scholarship committee you are applying to need to know about you in order for you to be selected successfully?
- Confirm if you need to send an online PDF reference letter or a hard copy letter inside an envelope. Ensure that signatures are: electronic (not typed in a "handwritten font") or actual. Your letter will require a signature!!!!
AND
- Remember to say “thank you” and update your reference if you are successful.

Are you asking someone to write you a reference letter?
Open the link below, download the document onto your computer and save it on your desktop (or documents). Fill it out, save it and send it to your referee with information about the scholarship and why you are applying. This document will aid your referee in knowing more about you rather than just "as a student" (as that is already evident from your transcript); this will allow them to write about you as a person.
You can update your profile as the years progress for your future resumes because you've downloaded it onto your personal computer; it's very difficult to fill it out on a phone.
