Joint Safety Message
Dear Families, Students, and Staff,
We are reaching out today to address a growing concern that affects not only our community but school districts across the country—threats of school violence, particularly those circulating on social media. As we recently shared with you, there has been an alarming increase in such threats nationwide, including in our district. While, thankfully, the threats we’ve encountered have been deemed non-credible, we want to emphasize that we take each one very seriously.
It is essential to understand that making threats, even in a joking manner, is not only disruptive and causes fear in our school community but can also lead to significant consequences. These include school disciplinary actions, such as suspension, and legal consequences, which may result in criminal charges. Threatening the safety of our students and staff is a matter we do not take lightly, and law enforcement holds individuals accountable for such actions.
If you or your child become aware of a threat or concerning information, please report it immediately to the police or school officials. Please refrain from reposting or sharing these threats on social media, as doing so only increases fear and spreads misinformation. The most effective way to handle these situations is through direct reporting to the appropriate authorities, allowing us to investigate quickly and ensure the safety of everyone involved.
We are committed to keeping our school community informed with relevant information when threats are reported. It is our responsibility to thoroughly investigate all reports in collaboration with law enforcement and provide communication as promptly as possible as updates become available.
We encourage families to have open conversations with their children about the seriousness of making threats and the potential consequences. Thank you for your attention to this matter and for helping us maintain a safe and supportive learning environment for everyone.
Sincerely,
Matt Degner
Superintendent
Iowa City Community School District

Supply Drive
Budgets continue to be tight, and we are seeking donations for a few of our most heavily used supplies. If you are willing and able to donate pencils, tissues, dry erase markers and hand sanitizer, please drop off these items in the main office. Thank you!
AVID Field Trip
On October 4, AVID elective students had the opportunity to visit Clarke University in Dubuque. These college field trips help our students make informed decisions about their future education by experiencing campus culture, interacting with college students, and gaining insights into the college admissions process. Beyond getting a taste of college life, students bond with other AVID students and help students get excited about life after high school
9th Grade Field Trip: Corridor Career Inspire
On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, all 9th grade students will attend the Corridor Career Inspire event at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids from 9:00am-12:00pm. This hands-on event will allow students to learn about career clusters from local business representatives and will help students align their high school course work with their career goals, launching students into their future careers and preparing for life after high school graduation.
Parents/guardians do not need to complete a permission slip; rather, parents should inform the Liberty school counseling office if they'd prefer to have their student stay at school.

Suicide Prevention & Awareness Webinar Recording
Thank you to all of you who attended the Webinar on Suicide Prevention and Awareness earlier this month. If you were unable to attend and would like to view it at your leisure, please see the attached 20 minute recording and PDF of the slides.
These slides were tailored to students, but provide some great resources and tips for all viewers.
In the webinar, we covered...
- Ways to care for yourself
- Ways to help a friend
- Resources at school and in our community
We as a counseling department are ALWAYS here to help you and your student. Educating yourself and talking about suicide is hard, but your students are worth it and we appreciate you taking the time to engage in the topic!
