Hispanic Heritage Month
“Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.”
“The term Hispanic or Latino, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race.” The Census Bureau estimates there were roughly 334.9 million Hispanics in the U.S. as of July 1, 2023.
“In 1976, the U.S. Congress passed a law that required the government to collect and analyze data for a specific ethnic group: “Americans of Spanish origin or descent.” That legislation defined this group as “Americans who identify themselves as being of Spanish-speaking background and trace their origin or descent from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Central and South America, and other Spanish-speaking countries.” This includes 20 Spanish-speaking nations from Latin America and Spain itself, but not Portugal or Portuguese-speaking Brazil.”

Student Dress Code
Hello Obama Parents,
I just wanted to drop by and remind everyone about the student appropriate dress code. All shirts and tops must cover the midriff at all times. The following are examples of clothing that are inappropriate: tank tops w/ straps thinner than 2 inches, strapless tops, spaghetti straps, off-the-shoulder, cut-out designs, low-cut shirts, bare-back, sheer or mesh clothing that does not have an appropriate blouse or shirt underneath, and clothes with inappropriate pictures and wording. Boys must wear shirts with sleeves.
Clothing must cover undergarments when sitting, standing, or bending.
Hemlines and slits on dresses, skirts, and shorts above mid-thigh are not acceptable. Length cannot be shorter than the tip of the fingers when arms are placed straight at the sides of the body.
Students who are inappropriately dressed will either:
1. Be asked to change.
2. Be given the opportunity to call home for a change of clothes.
3. Will report to the Inspiration Room if they cannot obtain a change of clothes.
Mrs. Crystle McCrystal
Assistant Principal
At Barack Obama Elementary School, it is our goal to create and sustain a positive learning environment in which all students can succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. The PBIS team is committed to reaching that goal by setting high expectations and creating a positive school culture that celebrates and acknowledges positive behaviors. At Obama, we do this through individualized and whole class rewards. Please reference the PRIDE matrix for behavioral expectations. Click the photo to view the matrix in larger format.
Our PBIS team works hard to bring fun and exciting programs, assemblies, and prizes to our students. We would like to encourage all parents/guardians to join our PBIS committee this school year. We will be meeting on the first Wednesday of every month from 3:30pm-4:30pm. If you are interested in joining our team, please reach out to Mrs. McCrystal (crystle.mccrystal@mapleschools.com) or Jules Wilder (juliana.wilder@mapleschools.com). We hope to see you at our first meeting on Wednesday, September 4th.
Ms. Jules Wilder
Student Wellness Coordinator
Welcome and welcome back families! Maple Heights is continuing to make student wellness a top priority this year. This not only includes the amazing efforts of our PBIS team to foster positive behavior but also restorative practices and social-emotional learning being incorporated into each school day. Over the next few weeks, you may hear your student talk about circles or mooZoom, two of our major efforts to support well-rounded growth in each of our students.
Circles: Community-building circles help to establish values, share experiences, and build relationships within our school community. While there is no typical community building circle, as all circles are unique, many of our teachers choose themes such as fun Friday, would you rather Wednesday, or “top 5” questions. These circles are ways for students to make small connections and learn more about each other in a pressure-free way.
MooZoom: mooZoom is a video-based platform for social-emotional learning (SEL) that is used in all classroom at Obama. SEL focuses on building 5 core skills: building and maintaining relationships, responsible decision making, self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness. Through these video lessons and activities, mooZoom encourages students to problem solve using 3 steps: pausing and taking a step back, identifying emotions and coming up with solutions, and choosing the best solution.
If you’d like to know more about the work that the Wellness & PBIS team and its partners are doing, you can check out our website here. You will find information and details about all the wellness initiatives occurring both at the district level and here at Barack Obama Elementary! If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me (juliana.wilder@mapleschools.com)!
