Middle School Update
This was a week of thankfulness and celebration. Students who went on the ski trip made the best thank you poster for Mr. Sobotta and everyone who helped take 68 students skiing for the day. Their words of gratitude and appreciation for this adventure club were absolutely heartwarming.
We celebrated positive behaviors and academic achievement on Wednesday with SO many awards–Academic Excellence and Honor Roll certificates were given out (with doughnuts!) along with the Reardan School Board sponsored “Reardan Rising Award” for students who raised two or more of their grades from first to second quarter. They received beautiful plaques along with treats for their scholastic efforts. We also recognized Character Trait of the Month students for the trait of Honesty and in partnership with The Spokane Tribe we gave out three I.M.P.A.C.T awards to students demonstrating Integrity, Motivation, Purpose, Academic Achievement, Community (respect for others and positive behavior) and Teamwork. Bobbi Williams came to our assembly and handed out our awards along with $100 Visa Gift Cards. We appreciate being able to partner with the Tribe and recognize the positive impact that our students are having in their community. Following the awards ceremony we had 72 of our middle school students who had ZERO tardies for the month of February. These students got to play games and enjoy savory snacks for the last period of the day–indoor axe throwing was a popular one along with Battle Cat videos in Mrs. V’s room.
Mid-quarter grades–just a snapshot of where students are as we are halfway through third quarter–are being mailed home. You might also have received a letter in the mail asking you to complete a NEW home language survey. Those can be done on the bright rose colored paper OR online in your Skyward account. Our goal is to have 100% completion of these surveys by March 8th, so thank you for your help with this!!
Elementary Update
Mother nature sure has a sense of humor as most of us have witnessed occasional squalls of snowfall as well as unseasonably cold temperatures. On that note, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather i.e. coats, boots, gloves, etc. Our students will have outdoor recess as long as the temperature is above 20 degrees and there is not excessive precipitation.
Our Lost and Found is overflowing. If your child is missing any clothing items, please stop by the Lost and Found. We often have a collection of hoodies, coats, gloves, etc. It is helpful to label your children’s clothing so we can return the items to their owner if found.
Our monthly PBIS awards assembly is Friday, March 1st at 8:10. The assembly is an opportunity to celebrate classes that follow common area expectations, announce bus riders of the week for the month, Wall of Fame winners and the top fundraisers for the Kids Heart Challenge.
Spring conferences are right around the corner. Please look for a handout with additional information going home with your student next week.
Mr. Baldwin’s homeroom ignited their creativity and boosted their critical thinking skills by designing and building a bridge. The challenge was they could only use a limited amount of materials. The materials consisted of: 3 sheets of copy paper, 10 index cards, and 24 in. of tape. Their bridge also had to meet specific requirements. The bridge had to stand on its own, be shaped like a rainbow (arch), and be at least 2 in. tall at its peak. Additionally, it needed to have the capacity to hold 7 crayons without collapsing. Once the bridges were built they had to be tested. Students were able to analyze and investigate the strengths and weaknesses of their bridges to determine what they would do differently if given the option to build again.

Security Update - Brad Eylar
Hi Parents,
Last week we went into a Secure and Teach posture. I thought it would be good to review some of the safety and security postures we use and why.
SECURE AND TEACH is initiated when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building. Secure and Teach uses our school’s physical security, locked doors, and single point entry as protections. Students will have inside recess and not go outside to go between buildings unless supervised. We will use this for a nearby dangerous animal, such as a cougar sighting, or criminal activity in the area. We will also use this for a threat or reported danger to a nearby school as well, as in the case last week.
LOCKDOWN is initiated to isolate and protect students and staff from immediate dangers that include armed intruders, violent behaviors, suspicious trespassers, or very close police activity. Lockdowns use the locked classrooms for protection.
EVACUATION is called when there is a need to move students from the school to another location. An evacuation can be to our on-site rally location or off-site reunification point.
Reunification with Family: If we need to reunite you with your students off-campus you will be told where to pick up your student. All pick ups will need to be tracked on our district emergency management tool. This will document who picks up, which can only be to those listed in Skyward with permissions.
BOMB THREAT is a written, electronic, telephone, or verbal threat towards our school. Protocol has students and staff ready for evacuation to a safer location only after making that decision with our Incident Command Team. School administrators, Director of Security, and Law Enforcement work together to address any bomb threat. With how many hoaxes our nation's schools receive, all responses will include collaboration with law enforcement.
I want to apologize last week when we did not reach out after going into Secure and Teach. Please know your student’s safety is of paramount concern and we will always err on the side of safety and go into a safer security posture until we are certain of everyone’s safety.

Transportation Update
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Due to driver shortages, we are temporarily modifying your route starting March 5th. For some, your route number, driver and time will be changing, for others, it will just be your time. Your drivers will be in touch this week if there have been any changes to your stop. The routes affected are: route 3 Prairie Crest, 4 Jacobs, 5 Espanola, and 9 Coulee Hite. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we navigate this time. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the transportation department 509-796-4361, Mike mmccain@reardansd.net or BriAnna bbroadrick@reardansd.net. Thank you!
