KMS Bi-Weekly Communication November 17, 2024
PARENTS PLEASE COMPLETE THE SURVEY IN THE, "Survey of New Schedule Section". Thanks in advance.
Good Evening KMS Parents,
First and foremost, congratulations to 8th grader [Student Name] for being recognized as the November Student of the Month! It’s hard to believe, but we’re just two weeks away from the end of November, and there’s a lot happening at KMS.
Fundraisers and Events:
On Thursday, the fundraising chocolate was delivered to 7th and 8th grade students as part of the first of three fundraisers for the Washington, D.C. and Chicago end-of-year trips. Our second fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, November 20th at Candy Cloud from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM (detailed information below). The third fundraiser will be at Chipotle on December 11th, also from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Please mark your calendars for these exciting events!
Conferences:
Our second round of parent-teacher conferences had an amazing turnout. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and make the day so meaningful.
Ongoing Fundraisers:
We’re also in full swing with our Ronald McDonald Pop Can Tab Fundraiser. After just one week, we’ve already collected so many tabs that I have a large bin nearly full! Thank you for your continued support.
Annual Food Drive:
We’re kicking off our Annual Food Drive this Monday. My goal is to get students excited and motivated to bring in as many donations as possible for the Kirtland Service Council, which directly benefits our local community. This year, we’re changing the format slightly—rather than rewarding just one class, I will be treating all middle school students to an Ice Cream Social as a thank you for their collective efforts. I want all students to be recognized for helping those in need. Donations will be collected through December 13th, when the Kirtland Fire Department will pick up the items. More details about the requested items can be found below.
Band/Choir Fundraiser:
There will also be a Band/Choir Fundraiser starting on November 18th. Ms. Smock and Ms. Bobbitt will send more information home about this event soon.
Survey on New Schedule: (ALL PARENTS PLEASE COMPLETE THE SURVEY)
Now that we’ve covered the upcoming events, I’d like to ask all parents with middle school students to complete a brief survey on how the new schedule is working for their child this year. Your feedback is incredibly valuable as we evaluate the effectiveness of the changes. Please take a moment to complete the survey by clicking on the following link:
[Parent Feedback on New Schedule]
The 8th graders completed their survey on Thursday, and the 6th and 7th graders will complete theirs on Monday during advisory. This data will be reviewed by our Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) to help guide potential adjustments for the second semester or next year, ensuring that we’re creating the best experience for students both socially and academically.
Important Dates & Lost and Found:
Please take a moment to review the KMS Important Dates for 2024-2025 (listed at the bottom of the newsletter). This calendar includes important events such as Choir and Band concerts, quarterly benchmarks, holiday breaks, and field trips.
Lastly, our Lost and Found is overflowing again! Items have been announced weekly at school, but please check the attached photo for a preview of what’s missing. All unclaimed items will be donated at the end of this week. If you’d like to check the Lost and Found in person, please reach out to Mrs. Gordon at jeannette.gordon@kirtlandschools.org, or feel free to stop by after school to look for any missing belongings.

Kirtland Academic Academy
The idea for KAA came out of a series of discussions the Building Leadership Team had regarding our desire to help students who need a little assistance every so often, while also trying to hold students with high amounts of missing work accountable. Missing work can have such a profoundly negative impact on student learning and success within the classroom and we want to provide something that can help. We believe that this program is a tremendous opportunity for kids who need help getting back on track, while also supporting students that just need a bit of assistance every now and again.
All KMS students are welcome at KAA. The academic team - including teachers, parents, and administrators - has the discretion to make this program mandatory for students with excessive missing work which negatively impacts student learning and success within the classroom.
In many ways, KAA is homework help, tutoring, and general academic assistance for any KMS student in attendance. KMS students do not need to sign up for KAA. They simply need to show up with things they want to work on, sign in, and get the help they need. We are confident that this process will help these students find great success.

Kirtland Middle School - Important Dates 2024-2025
The link provided will take you the Kirtland Middle School - Important Dates for the 23-24 school year. There are still a few things that need to be added at the end of the school year, but they will be updated in the next couple of days. My goal for the year is to be as transparent as possible to major events taking place down the road at the school. I will continue to add to the important date section of the newsletter for upcoming events, but if you are wanting to plan for things, please refer to this document.
