Message for 5th grade families
Fifth Grade Families,
Battle of the Books is a reading challenge that is offered to fifth and sixth grade students. In the past, we have formed a school team and competed in this event. Beginning this year, we will not be forming a school team. If Battle of the Books is something that your student would like to participate in, you can find information here to find out how to get them involved.

Snacks at Big Creek
As the holiday season approaches us and has lots of good treats to offer....just a reminder about our snack policy.
If you have snack time in class, please remind students the snacks must be healthy.
Examples include fruit, veggies, popcorn, pretzels, cheese sticks. They are not allowed to have cookies, candy, etc.
Non-Designated Bus Route
Due to our increasing enrollment and the current shortage of bus drivers, we are no
longer able to allow students to ride home on routes other than their designated one with
friends. We have several open positions throughout the district, including route drivers,
substitutes, and paraeducators. If you or someone you know is interested in applying, please
click on the link below. Thank you for your understanding and consideration.

Big Creek Reminders
Contacting staff: Please be respectful of our staff and refrain from texting or calling staff on their cell phones. If you are a parent needing to get in touch with a staff member, please only call the school at 515-984-3400 or communicate through email. If emailing the staff, you may not get a response immediately.
Big Creek Start Time: School starts at 8:20 (10:20 on Mondays). Students may enter the building at 8:05(10:05) or 8:00(10:00) if they are eating breakfast. We begin each day with a morning meeting. During this time, students work to build community and create a safe, caring learning environment for each student and staff member. We believe in the importance of this time for all. Please ensure your student is at school with enough time to be in the classroom by the start time. If your student is walking into school past the start time, you will need to come in with them to sign them in. Thank you for your help with this.
Watches/Phones: We encourage you to leave these items at home. If a student has a phone at school, it is to remain in the student’s backpack in silent mode or off until the child is off school grounds. If a student has a smart watch at school, it should not be used for communication throughout the day, or it will need to be placed in their backpack. Electronic devices may be taken from a student for inappropriate use. The school is not responsible for loss of or damage to personal items. If you need to communicate with your student for any reason during the day, please contact the office.
