Techie Dudes Internship- North St. Paul Location
Sophia Hanna, Current Junior
What sparked your interested in Cyber Security or computers in general?
I’d have to say that my middle school computer engineering class got me into computers in general. But my specific interest in cybersecurity comes from wanting to protect people like my grandpa. He would call my dad every so often saying he got a virus on his computer or that he entered his banking information into a fake website. I hate seeing stuff like that happen to people and want to do everything I can to help this problem.
How did you get your internship at Techie Dudes?
I went to one of the Career Pathways WIN sessions with Ms. Stanley and she set me up with an informational interview. I went to the White Bear store to meet with Jeffry Borglum just to talk with a tech expert. He asked me what experience I had and then he commented on how extroverted I was. Next thing I know I’m being handed some shirts and being told my start date!
What does your typical day look like?
After school I drive to work and check what there is to be done. I usually get some instruction from either Rob (my manager) or Allan (a technician). I could be doing virus cleanup, replace parts or calling customers to tell them their computer is ready. It all depends on what’s in the shop that day. If all my work is done and I have extra time I’ll clean.
What are you learning?
I’m learning how to diagnose common computer issues, what tools can be used to fix those issues, and customer service skills.
What do you like most about your internship?
Knowing that I’m helping people. I love getting to see customers walk away satisfied with their newly fixed computers.
What classes are you taking that align with what you want to do in the future?
I took Computer Programming 1&2 and Webpage Design last year. I plan to take Cybersecurity, Virtualization & Forensics and Computer Science at Century College through PSEO next year.
