Are You Ready to Support?
Budget Committee Needed
Dear Coupeville School District Families,
We are excited to invite you to be a part of our district's budget planning process for the upcoming year.
Beginning in December, we will be forming a collaborative budget committee that brings together diverse perspectives to shape the financial future of our district.
Our approach is straightforward: we believe that the most effective budget decisions happen when all voices are heard. This isn't just about balancing numbers—it's about investing in our community's most precious resource: our students.
We are seeking passionate parents, community members, and stakeholders who are interested in:
- Understanding our district's financial landscape
- Contributing innovative ideas for resource management
- Working together to support our educational goals
The budget committee will be organized to ensure a balance in voices including:
- Student Representatives
- Community and Family Representatives
- Staff
- Administration and Directors
Your participation will be crucial in helping us:
- Generate creative solutions for financial sustainability
- Ensure minimal disruption to core educational services
- Make data-driven decisions that prioritize student success
We're looking for individuals who can commit to:
- Attending approximately 90% of meetings
- Communicating effectively to reach consensus
- Listening actively
- Representing our community's diverse interests
If you are interested in joining this important work, there will be a survey coming out in the next couple weeks to collect information for those interested. Please stay tuned. Our goal is to begin meetings in January. We will hold these meetings in the evening and the time will be around 90 minutes.
Together, we can create a budget that reflects our community's values and supports our students' bright futures.
Sincerely,
Shannon Leatherwood, Superintendent

Leos in Action
November Highlights!
Mady Schroeder (Sno-Isle Libraries) presented a creative way to earn community service hours by writing book reviews for the library. And Preston Merritt (Big Brothers Big Sisters) shared how "Bigs" and "Littles" both grow through their time together, proving that one hour a week can leave a lasting impact on two lives.
The fun didn’t end there! LEOs also rolled up their sleeves to help build trails at the Whidbey Camano Land Trust's Keystone Preserve. Up next? The Coupeville snowmen are on their way!

Transportation: Attention Please
At Coupeville School District, the safety of our students is essential. To enhance safety and improve the efficiency of student drop-offs and pick-ups, we are implementing a new procedure for the middle school loop.
Effective immediately, all family vehicles, regardless of whether you have a middle school or high school student, should use the high school loop and parking lot for drop-off and pick-up.
We have observed an increase in safety risks in the middle school loop due to congestion, limited visibility, and student movement around vehicles. By dedicating the middle school loop to buses and transit vehicles only, we can significantly reduce these risks and improve overall safety.
We understand that this change may require some adjustment. However, we believe it is essential to prioritize the safety of our students. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we implement this new procedure.
Thank you for your support.
Important Reminder from Transportation
Designated Individuals for Student Pickup at Bus Stops
As a reminder, district policy requires that students in 1st grade or lower must be met by a designated individual at the bus stop in order to be released from the bus.
To ensure the drivers can provide a safe and smooth transition, designated individuals must meet the student directly at the bus door upon arrival. If you need to arrange an alternative plan, please submit a written request to the Transportation Department for approval.
Key Reminders:
- Timeliness: Designated individuals should arrive at the bus stop 5–10 minutes before the scheduled arrival time.
- Student Release: Students will only be released to the designated individual who is present at the bus door.
- In Case of Absence: If a designated individual is not present, transportation staff will follow district protocols to ensure student safety.
