Principal's Message
Dear Pershing Families,
A huge thank you to our Pershing Foundation Vice President Diana Smith, the entire Foundation Board, the Believe It Achieve It organization, our custodial crew, and all our parent volunteers who helped pull off a great Challenge Course event on Friday! It was truly a great experience for our students. Below there are some great pictures from the event. Also, be sure to scroll down to the Challenge Course section to see the winners from the Challenge Course fundraiser raffle!
This week we are wrapping up statewide testing for our 8th graders. We have a few students left who need to complete their science exam. We appreciate all the help and support we have gotten these past few weeks as we complete statewide testing.
Also congratulations to our Boys and Girls Flag Football teams on their victories. Both teams are advancing to the semi-finals next week. We have some incredibly talented athletes here at Pershing - did you know our Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer teams were league champions and our Boys Soccer, Boys Volleyball, and Girls Volleyball teams were also league runners-up? I cannot think of another middle school in San Diego Unified that has had this level of success - great work Panthers!
This week we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month with a spirit week. Please see the flyer above the principal's message for details. Also, in honor of Memorial Day, our ASB has some special activities planned including encouraging all students to wear red, white, and blue on Thursday.
Finally, a reminder to all our families that Thursday is a special minimum day schedule and school ends at 12:44 PM. In honor of Memorial Day there is no school on Friday, May 22 and Monday, May 29. School resumes on a regular bell schedule on Tuesday, May 30. We are in the final month of school, please remind your students to keep working hard and let's finish this school year strong!
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray
Important Announcements for the Week of May 22nd
HARVEY MILK DAY PROGRESSIVE FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
Students in the Pershing Pride GSA will be participating in a flag raising ceremony this week where they raise the progressive flag in honor of Harvey Milk Day . Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician in California and fought to end discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals. He was assassinated in 1978 but his activism laid the groundwork for many of the civil rights advances we see today.

JOINT JUNETEENTH ACTIVITY WITH GAGE ELEMENTARY
The week of June 5th, Pershing Middle School has been invited to join Gage Elementary in celebrating Juneteenth. We are looking for approximately 8-10 middle school students to represent Pershing at this activity. If you are interested please contact Ms. Jakalah Jones our Library Tech.
PE LOANER UNIFORMS
Our PE Department has noticed a significant uptick in the number of loaner PE clothes being distributed daily. The idea behind our loaner program is to provide students with a loaner shirt or pair of shorts every once in a while in case they left their PE gear at home. We have many students who are asking for loaners every day. Please double check with your child and make sure the are bringing their PE uniform to school. If your child has lost or outgrown their PE gear please contact our financial secretary Ms. Grace Lopez at glopez2@sandi.net
