Principal's Message
Dear Skyline K-8 Families,
Thank you all for another great week and thank you all for your continued dedication to our students.
I cannot say enough how proud and lucky I am to serve you all and the Skyline K-8 Community.
Student Belonging Pick-Up Day
Pick-up day for student belongings will be on Thursday, June 11th. This will be the only day available to pick-up belongings. Families should come to the front of the school and will let the staff members in the front of the building know their last name(s) and which students they are picking up for. Belongings will be brought out and placed down in a designated area, once the staff member has cleared the area, the family will enter to pick-up.
It is important that this process is as contactless as possible.
*Debbi will be sending more specific information as this day approaches but please mark your calendars!
Kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third-grade classrooms are under construction right now (having the windows replaced), so we are not certain that these students will have belongings available on June 11th. I am waiting to hear back from the project manager and custodian.
8th Grade Promotion:
8th Grade Promotion was changed to June 11th at 6:00 p.m. The date was changed due to Lincoln changing their graduation ceremony date. Please email any pictures you have of our current 8th graders (they can be recent or from when they were younger) to mdunn@pps.net and mark your calendars. The clap out will be at Skyline K-8 and families will drive through the staff clap out. Thank you so much for helping us to make this a special time for our amazing 8th-grade students. More details to come soon, however, 8th Grade Promotion will take place following all ODE guidelines for social distancing. ODE guidelines.
Virtual IB Assembly:
Our next Virtual IB Assembly is this Tuesday, June 2nd. Thank you so much to Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Hiser, and staff for planning these virtual assemblies.
Registration:
Register for Kindergarten Online!
If you have a child who will be 5 years old by September 1, please register for kindergarten! To register, go to pps.net/kinderenroll. The process takes 20-30 minutes and school staff will follow up with you later in the summer. With schools closed, online registration is the easiest option, but paper options will be available soon. You don’t need to register if your child attends a PPS Head Start or Pre-Kindergarten program.
Things we don’t have answers to yet:
The following items we do not currently have answers for but will update you as soon as possible.
Timeline and process for returning Chromebooks
What the beginning of the school year will look like next year
We are wishing you the best and miss your children very much! Please let us know what you need and keep washing hands and social distancing.
Best,
BG

Happy June everyone!
My lesson last week and for this week will focus on the resiliency strategy of gratitude. Gratitude is defined as being aware of and thankful for the good things in our lives and taking the time to show our appreciation. Research shows that gratitude helps people feel positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships (Harvard Medical School: Source). During my lesson I shared two videos on gratitude that I thought was pretty fun/interesting: The Science of Gratitude and Kid President’s 25 Reasons To Be Thankful!
Next week is my last week for live lessons, and I would love to see as many students as possible! Feel free to pop in and just say hi for the first few minutes!

Leap into 9th Grade – Program canceled for summer 2020

PTA Connection
Dear Skyline Community:
Thursday’s PTA meeting was our last of the school year and my last as your president! Thank you to those who could join us. And thank you to those who signed the group e-thank you card! I can't wait to read through all the messages. It’s been an absolute pleasure serving our community alongside all of you. As I often say, it takes a team, and I could not have done any of it without the many parent volunteers and teachers who stepped up to fill in when needed, offer guidance when requested, and provide support throughout.
A heartfelt thank you to outgoing PTA treasurer Amber Anderson and secretary Carly Mersereau who waded through my countless emails and texts, discussed numerous PTA issues wherever and whenever, and who were like captains of an extraordinary team, people I grew to rely on and turn to for support. Thank you, both of you, for being my rocks these past two years, and for putting in so many hours for our kids, teachers, and community.
A heartfelt welcome to PTA's incoming president Langdon Peale, treasurer Ericka Macy Gustafson, and secretary Sam Freeman, all of whom were voted into office yesterday evening. You are wonderful additions to the PTA executive board. PTA Vice President Laura Watts and Volunteer Coordinator Abbey Poizer will help guide you during the transition. Thank you for stepping up when we needed you most! We look forward to seeing what you do these next two years.
And, finally, it's with tremendous pleasure that I announce this year's PTA Lifetime Achievement Award winners: Liz Ascher and Michelle Worthington-Ruppelt! They've given 1,000's of volunteer hours to Skyline over the years. We’ve grown to rely on their selfless dedication to our school.
Can it be? School ends next week?! I wish you all an EXCELLENT summer! Thank you, all of you, for your enthusiasm, energy, care and commitment to our community. We are small but mighty.
Keep on, keeping on, Skyline!
Yours, in appreciation,
Clarissa Kearns
Skyline PTA President (2018-2020)
Let’s Get Moving for the Arts!
Our Move for the Arts (MFTA) fundraising committee is moving forward with fundraising for next year’s visual arts programming! Skyline PTA will accept donations exclusively online via PayPal or credit card beginning now!
DEADLINE: June 12, 2020
How You Can Help: Please support your child and the visual arts by donating online via PayPal or credit card. Anyone can donate on behalf of your child/ren. Ask family members and friends to participate in this online fundraiser!
The money raised goes directly to Skyline PTA and is used to pay for 2020/21 visual arts programming for all Skyline students.
If each student donates $30, we will reach our goal of raising $6,000 to fund fully visual arts programming for the 2020/21 school year. But any amount is appreciated!
PRIZES! To be determined and distributed once school resumes in the fall. To be considered for a prize, please donate by June 12, 2020.
• Level 1 Prize: Raise at least $150
• Level 2 Prize: Raise at least $120
• Level 3 Prize: Raise at least $90
Corporate Matching! A donation of $60 becomes $120! Donations to Skyline PTA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, for visual arts programming are tax-deductible and eligible for corporate matching gifts. Request a receipt from Skyline PTA and then submit it to your employer to make your donation go TWICE as far! (Skyline Tax ID: 93-6039406).
How to Submit an Online Payment:
1. Click here to donate via PayPal* Click here to donate with a credit card*
2. In the message area, please type in the student’s name and “visual arts” (or something similar) so that Skyline PTA knows to whom the donation should be attributed and why.
3. You may submit one donation for multiple students, i.e. indicate “Student A, $30; Student B, $30” in the message area.
*Please consider donating a little extra in light of transaction fees. Thank you!

Extra Food Benefits for Families During School Closures
If your children normally get free or reduced-price school meals, you’re eligible to get extra grocery money. It’s a new program called Pandemic-EBT (P-EBT).
For each month that school is closed and you are eligible, you will get $5.70 per day for each of your children a K-12 school, school-based preschool, or school-based Headstart that normally participate in the National School Lunch Program. AND you can still get “grab and go” meals from school during the pandemic!
Immigration status does not matter for Pandemic EBT. Pandemic EBT will not count in a public charge test.
Here are the ways your family can receive the Pandemic EBT benefit:
- Already get SNAP? The extra money will be loaded on your Oregon Trail EBT card automatically.
- Don’t have SNAP, but already qualify for free or reduced school meals? A new EBT card will be automatically mailed to you with instructions. If your whole school gets free meals, you will qualify too. Even though Pandemic EBT uses the same type of card as SNAP, Pandemic EBT is NOT SNAP benefits and is not considered in a public charge test.
- Never received SNAP or free and reduced-price school meals before?
- A simple way to access the P-EBT benefit is by applying for free school meals here: https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp.
- Receiving SNAP benefits can also qualify you, here's how to apply https://govstatus.egov.com/or-dhs-benefits.
- You will automatically be given Pandemic EBT benefits starting the month you’re approved for either free school meals or SNAP.
