Newsletter 3 Term 4
Onerahi School Friday 13 November
Te Karere o te Tumuaki/Principal's Message
Kia ora e te Whānau,
This term, and indeed this whole year, has gone by very quickly. There have been many highlights including camps, having the pool open, and the inaugural colour run. What a fun day that was. Many thanks to the local Fire Brigade for bringing the water, and making the colour stick! The event also raised just over $9000 for the school and some great prizes for the tamariki, which is fantastic! Thank you so much for your support.
Everyone can be very proud of our tamariki for a successful year. They have grown in a range of areas, contributed to their learning and the learning of others, and through their actions show a strong sense of belonging. It's been such a pleasure to acknowledge students over the last couple of days. It has also been exciting to hear of the successes of our past students.
Next week our Year 6 students will graduate and head off on the next stage of their learning journey. We will also farewell students who are off to new places and new spaces - be it a different school, different town, or even a different country. We wish them all the very best for their futures and sincerely thank them for all they have done during their time at Onerahi School. We trust that they go forward with fond memories of their time here.
It will shortly be time to put our feet up, rest, recharge and enjoy a hopefully fine summer. Make the most of the festive season with whānau and friends. Stay safe.

Camps/Puni
We have had a lot of exciting camps happen amongst our Nest, Middle and Senior teams in the last few weeks. First up, the Middle school enjoyed a 2 day camp experience on the 26th and 27th of November with an overnight stay at our kura. The days were spent split between a trip across to Matakohe (Limestone Island), and surf lessons out at Sandy Bay. The weather was fantastic, and our year 3's and 4's came back tired but happy at the end of their days, learning things they would not be able to here onsite.
Next up, our Nest team had a day camp on Thursday the 5th and Friday the 6th of December. Busloads of our littlest learners headed out to Whangaumu (Wellingtons Bay) for a day of fun at the beach on the 5th before coming back to share evening kai at the school and heading home to crash into bed. They had a day of fun-filled activities onsite at the school on the Friday. Once again, the weather delivered and a great time was had by all.
From the 8th to the 10th of December students from rooms 3, 4, 5 and 6 headed off to Chosen Valley, in Drury, Auckland for their senior camp. Our students were able to challenge themselves on a wide range of activities, some individual and some team based. The days were long but lots of fun!
None of these trips would have been possible without a lot of organisation by our dedicated kaimahi, and the support of our whānau. We thank you all.
Athletics/Kaipara
All of our teams have run their own summer athletic events over the past few weeks. Our seniors started things off with their Athletics day on 25th November (with finals for some events on the 26th). Some of our seniors were also invited to participate in the WPSSA Athletics champs on the 4th of December. We would like to thank them for representing our kura so well.

Next up was The Nest - with their "NEST Olympics" event on the 10th of December. Great fun was had by all participants who got out there and gave it a go.
And finally, our Middle school warmed up the muscles and had their own "Run, Jump, Throw" day on Wednesday the 11th of December. They began practicing the skills they will use in athletic events in the senior school. We are so proud of our students who joined in and gave their all.
Colour Run
On a bright sunny warm Tuesday at the end of November our school held it's first colour run. The school was awash in a sea of colour as children completed a lap of our grounds, facing a range of fun obstacles - including a good spray of cooling water from our local volunteer Fire Brigade. This event not only raised over $9000 for our kura, but was a wonderful event enjoyed by students, staff and whānau alike. Thank you to all those who contributed in some way, be it financially, or through their organisation and donations of time and materials. Thank you also to Gareth Blithe for co-ordinating the event.
Te Whanga Festival 2024
This year Whangarei Heads School hosted our Te Whanga Kapa Haka Festival on Tuesday the 3rd of December. Our kura sent our performance rōpu, "Te Tau Ihu" and our development rōpu "Whakapuawai"- out to participate, and they did a tremendous job. Thank you to all our tamariki for representing our kura so well and to our staff who organised the participation.
Ākonga/Students Corner
It is great to finish the year by sharing some beautiful mahi from our tamariki with you.
Check out this excerpt from a fantastic short story written by Kleo Gardiner....
Jack was curiously doing experiments when he heard a weird noise, coming from the corner of the room. In the corner of the room, there was only a jar of slime… The slime was heaps of colours, was slimy and as cold as ice. It smelt like pies, oats and glue.
Jack looked closely at the jar of slime, not seeing anything unusual in it, and he walked back to his table. On the table he had all of his experiments. He was trying to make a spray that would get rid of his annoying sister. Forever.
Jacks’ sisters name was Makenzie. She is only 6 years old, but has the attitude of a teenager. Makenzie is the most annoying little sister you could ever have. She loves to play pranks and tricks on Jack, just to make him angry. Like the shaving cream prank…
Suddenly, Jack heard the noise again. He walked up to the jar, even more puzzled now. “What is making that noise?” Jack thought to himself. Jack opened the jar and touched the slime. He jumped back in pain. “Ow” Jack cried. The slime was now as hot as fire. Jack was so determined to find out what was going on....
Kokonga o Kirsty/Kirsty's corner
It's the end of the year and I am putting out a final plea for library books.
There are still 109 library books that are not on loan but are not in the library as well 106 overdue library books. Can you please search your houses and see if any have been brought home by mistake and return them to school this week. (sometimes little ones will swap library books or take one from the class library)
On a more positive note the school library is open for holiday issuing. If your child is returning to Onerahi School next year they are more than welcome to borrow books for the summer. I also have a summer reading challenge booklet (zine) which all ākonga are welcome to take. Any zines returned to me next year will go in the draw for a spot prize.
Happy reading and happy holidays.
Ngā mihi,
Kirsty
Honey
We still have a great stock of honey available for purchase at the school office. Honey has been kindly donated by our partner beekeepers - Tahi honey, and we have further been gifted larger sized jars of Honeyeater honey - also from local Pataua hives. The honey is priced amazingly from $5 per jar to $20 (the big 1 kg jars) so why not pop in and pick some up. Might make some lovely Christmas gifts for whanau.
2nd hand Uniform
As fast as they come, they go! We are still a bit light on most of our secondhand uniform supplies. Especially in any larger sizes. As soon as it comes in, it tends to quickly find a new home. If your child has outgrown their uniform and you have no further need of it, please feel free to drop it in to the school office. The sales of these help the school purchase additional items that our former PTA used to supply, such as sunscreen, etc.
Keeping our students safe when arriving and departing school
Senior leadership and the Board are currently working with the council to establish a safe travel plan. More information will come out in due course.

If they do not come with a hat during this term, they will be unable to play outdoors in play break. This is in keeping with our sun safe policy. Also, with the pool open for Term 1, a reminder to all to check which day your tamariki has pool time scheduled and please remember to pack named togs and towel and (optional) goggles for these days.

Where possible, we ask that appointments be scheduled outside of school hours, so as not to impact on your child's learning. We also ask that every effort is made to arrive at school in time for learning at 9am.
IMPORTANT NOTICES/TINO PANUI NUI
Medication: If your child requires medication to be brought or kept at school, please be aware that due to health and safety concerns, this must be kept secure in the school sick bay. It is not to be kept in children’s schoolbags during the day. This is to protect the safety of not only the child requiring the medication but also all other students.
