Our DRES Field Day is scheduled for Friday, May 31. Make sure your child is dressed in comfortable clothes to run and play, as well as tennis shoes/sneakers.
EOGs- 3rd-5th Grade
Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders will all take the End of Grade assessments (EOGs) over the last 10 days of school.
June 17- 3rd, 4th, 5th Grade Reading
June 18- 4th, 5th Grade Math
June 20- 3rd Math, 5th Science
June 13, 14, 21- May be used for students that require accommodations.
Please make sure your children are at school and on time for EOG days.
We have very strict testing guidelines and windows that we must follow.
How to Prep for EOGs
- Get on a healthy bedtime routine. Students are supposed to get between 8-10 hours of sleep each night. This helps them stay awake and focused at school.
- Practice multiplication & division facts
- Encourage your child to read at home. Build up their reading stamina (the ability to focus and read for extended periods of time without becoming distracted or losing interest.) The Reading EOG is very long and children tend to get tired reading the long passages and answering the questions.
- Encourage your child to do their best: Remind them to answer all questions, even if they are unsure of the answer.
- Have a healthy breakfast: Avoid high-sugar foods.
- Avoid scheduling appointments on test dates: Testing must finish on the day it is started.
Teacher Assignments for 24-25
We will mail out postcards the week of July 4 to let your child know who their teacher will be for the upcoming school year. If you do not get a post card by mid-July, please call the school to inquire. We will use the address we have on file at the school to mail the postcards. If that address has changed, please inform Mrs. Antonio at santonio@wcpss.net.
Next School Year
- If you have a student that will be coming to Kindergarten next school year, please get them registered ASAP!
- If your child is in Kindergarten-Fourth Grade and NOT returning to Durant Road Elementary next school year, please reach out to Silvia Antonio at santonio@wcpss.net to let her know where your child will attend school next year.

Chronic Absenteeism
What is considered Chronic Absenteeism?
Missing 10% or more of the school days. That would be 17 or more days absent in a school year.
Why does Chronic Absenteeism Matter?
Being physically present in school is a necessary precursor to learning. Chronic absenteeism in early grades may prevent children from developing the skills they need to succeed in later grades. Research has repeatedly found a “clear and consistent relationship between early attendance and later achievement,” including:
- Lower academic performance in 1st and 5th grades
- Persistently lower academic scores in grades 3-5
- An increased likelihood of reading below grade level
- An increased likelihood of needing reading intervention
In middle grades, chronically absent students are less likely to be on-track to graduate from high school on time. In fact, improving attendance is a better predictor of high school outcomes than test score improvement.

Be sure to read this and refer to it throughout the school year. It is located on our school website in the Parents section.
Family Engagement Playground and Meet Up Dates
In order to continue to build community, we will have Saturday meet ups at different parks throughout the county. We'd love for you and your family to join us to meet one another and provide a time for the kids to play. Reminders and times will be sent out throughout the year. We have set a time for the first one and will communicate the other times going forward.
